<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The U.S. Department of State approved a possible $4.5 billion Foreign Military Sale to Qatar for the purchase of aerial refueling aircraft and related equipment. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Qatar’s government requested to buy up to four KC-46As, eight PW4062 turbofan engines, 10 AN/ALR-69A radar warning receivers, 15 Guardian Laser Transmitter Assemblies for Large Aircraft Infrared Countermeasure systems and 8 LAIRCM system processor replacements, according to a <a href="https://www.state.gov/releases/bureau-of-political-military-affairs/2026/08/qatar-kc-46a-aerial-refueling-aircraft/" target="_blank" rel="">Thursday release</a>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The proposed sale also includes “non-major defense equipment,” such as precision navigation, transportation and airlift support, personnel training and training equipment and other related logistical and program support items, per the statement. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“The proposed sale will increase Qatar’s capability to meet current and future threats by enhancing its defense capabilities and interoperability with U.S. and allied forces and reinforcing Qatar’s strategic role in regional security,” the release reads.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The potential sale is meant to support U.S. foreign policy and national security objectives through assisting in Qatar’s security. The U.S. government statement describes the country as a “strategic regional partner” that continues to be an “important force” for political stability and economic progress in the Middle East.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Principal contractors for the envisioned deal include Boeing, Pratt &amp; Whitney Military Engines, RTX Corporation and Northrop Grumman Corporation. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The proposed sale’s implementation will not require any additional U.S. government or contractor representatives to Qatar, the announcement says.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“At this time, the U.S. Government is not aware of any offset agreement proposed in connection with this potential sale,” the statement says. “Any offset agreement will be defined in negotiations between the purchaser and the contractor.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The <a href="https://www.af.mil/About-Us/Fact-Sheets/Display/Article/104537/kc-46a-pegasus/" target="_blank" rel="">KC-46A</a> provides aerial refueling support to the U.S. Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps and partner nations and has greater refueling, cargo and aeromedical evacuation capabilities than the aging KC-135s.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The announcement comes as questions persist surrounding the <a href="https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2026/07/20/new-air-force-one-to-get-maxed-out-upgrades-after-security-questions/" target="_blank" rel="">security features</a> of a Qatari-donated Air Force One aircraft that has been modified for U.S. presidential use. President Donald Trump began using the new jet in July and has since announced it will be “maxed out” for upgrades.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Pentagon is defending the safety of M17 and M18 handguns — military versions of the controversial SIG Sauer P320 — saying that “there has never been a mechanically caused accidental discharge” involving the service weapon.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Aug. 7 <a href="https://cpeground.army.mil/News/Article-Display/Article/4566562/department-of-war-confirms-modular-handgun-system-mhs-is-safe-and-reliable/" target="_blank" rel="">statement</a> followed a review of the Modular Handgun System, a program led by the Army’s Project Manager Soldier Lethality, initiated after an <a href="https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2025/07/28/airman-killed-by-m18-pistol-was-21-year-old-from-kentucky/" target="_blank" rel="">airman was shot and killed</a> because of an alleged “uncommanded discharge” with an M18 handgun. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Last year’s incident resulted in an immediate inspection of all M18 handguns issued by the Air Force Global Strike Command as well as a <a href="https://www.militarytimes.com/air/2025/07/24/air-force-suspends-use-of-m18-pistols-after-airmans-death/" target="_blank" rel="">temporary pause</a> of their use, which was <a href="https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-air-force/2025/08/26/global-strike-resumes-using-m18-pistol-with-new-inspection-rules/" target="_blank" rel="">lifted a month later</a>. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Additionally, three airmen involved in the deadly shooting were <a href="https://www.airforcetimes.com/news/your-air-force/2025/11/04/airmen-plead-guilty-to-false-statements-in-shooting-that-suspended-m18/" target="_blank" rel="">charged with lying to investigators</a>. They claimed the gun just “went off” when the shooter slammed his duty belt against a desk, when in reality, he had pointed it at the victim in a “joking manner.” </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">According to the statement, the Army has investigated all reports of incidents involving MHS pistols discharging without a trigger pull, and firearms mishaps account for less than 0.006% of all MHS pistols issued.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“All investigated incidents of alleged ‘uncommanded discharges’ have been traced back to the trigger being pulled,” Army officials say, adding that they blame “public speculation and online misinformation” for the safety concerns regarding the handgun design. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">However, the civilian version of the handgun has been linked to dozens of injuries and a handful of deaths, with victims claiming the gun discharged a round without a trigger pull. In turn, the design has been the subject of more than <a href="https://www.thetrace.org/2023/04/sig-sauer-p320-upgrade-safety/" target="_blank" rel="">100 legal challenges</a> since it was introduced in 2014, with varying outcomes. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In many of the lawsuits, attorneys <a href="https://smokinggun.org/new-videos-highlight-dangers-of-sig-sauer-p320-pistols-firing-unintentionally/" target="_blank" rel="">argue</a> that the design’s passive safeties can fail to adequately prevent unintentional manipulation of the trigger. It’s important to note that unlike the civilian P320, the M18 and M17 pistol designs are <a href="https://www.pewpewtactical.com/sig-sauer-p320-vs-m17-vs-m18/" target="_blank" rel="">equipped with a manual safety</a>. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Since the <a href="https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-army/2017/01/19/army-your-new-handgun-will-be-a-sig-sauer/" target="_blank" rel="">SIG design won DoD approval</a> in 2017, M17 and M18 pistols have become the standard-issue sidearm for the Army, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Navy. There are more than 400,000 currently in service. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The U.S. Air Force wants target drones that can mimic the performance of a variety of aircraft, from stealth fighters and heavy bombers to large and small drones.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The goal is to create a family of drones that can “represent the full range of airborne threats, spanning from inexpensive ‘hobby drones’ to the most advanced adversary fighter and large-scale aircraft,” according to the Air Force’s <a href="https://sam.gov/workspace/contract/opp/e5e3b2bb3aee4155ab5a5ab9fc5d4125/view" target="_blank" rel="">Request for Information</a>, which has a deadline of Sept. 28.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At the same time, the Air Force desires next-generation target drones that are so inexpensive and easy to manufacture that they can be “treated as attritable or expendable when required.” </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As with drones and other new technologies, the Pentagon is turning to private industry for fresh ideas, “including commercial, modified commercial, dual-use, and non-developmental solutions,” the RFI said. “The government is particularly interested in non-traditional, commercially derived, or dual-use solutions that offer advantages in cost, scalability, and simplicity over legacy systems.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The new target drones are expected to simulate a wide array of capabilities.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For fighters, the drones should have “supersonic capabilities (up to and exceeding Mach 1.6 at 40,000 feet), high-agility/high-G combat maneuvers, precise low-observable Radar Cross-section (RCS) profiles, multi-spectral Infrared (IR) signatures, active RF emissions, and integrated Electronic Attack (EA) capabilities,” according to the RFI.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To simulate C-130-sized multiengine aircraft, the focus is less on high performance and more on “matching the physical scale, slow subsonic flight envelopes, and propeller or turbofan propulsion characteristics of larger multi-engine aircraft. These platforms must prioritize representative physical volume, basic RF/IR emissions, and realistic radar returns to verify missile seeker guidance, and warhead lethality against large-frame targets.” </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For even bigger aircraft, such as strategic bombers and AWACS planes, the key is “replicating the massive physical dimensions, multi-spectral thermal signatures, and heavy-aircraft radar strategic threats.” </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To mimic big Group 5 unmanned aerial vehicles, the target drone should be capable of flying at 50,000 feet. For Group 3 and 4 UAVs, the targets should be capable of flying at Mach 0.5 to 0.8, and maneuver at 3 to 6 Gs. For small Group 1 and 2 drones, the targets should fly at speeds of less than 150 knots and be capable of drone-swarm operations. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Remote-controlled target drones have been used for nearly a century, including Britain’s <a href="https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/spiesfly/uavs_05.html" target="_blank" rel="">Queen Bee</a> — a converted Tiger Moth trainer — in the 1930s. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">More recently, the U.S. Air Force has relied since 2007 on the subsonic — and subscale – <a href="https://www.af.mil/About-Us/Fact-Sheets/Display/Article/104562/bqm-167a-air-force-subscale-aerial-target/" target="_blank" rel="">BQM-167A</a>. At 20 feet long and with a wingspan of 11 feet, it hardly resembles a 67-foot-long Chinese J-20 stealth fighter or a 108-foot-wide Chinese H6 bomber. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Air Force also has the QF-16, a converted F-16 that can play the role of a full-sized target, such as a fourth-generation fighter. While a practical way to make use of retired jets, they aren’t meant to simulate fifth-generation stealth fighters or large aircraft, nor are they cheap enough to be expended in quantity.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A U.S. Space Force Space Domain Awareness payload launched successfully Aug. 10 aboard Japan’s Quasi-Zenith Satellite 7, or QZS-7, completing a bilateral effort that places American sensors on Japanese navigation satellites. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The U.S. payload rode a Japanese H3 rocket from Tanegashima Space Center. It is the second and final sensor in the Quasi-Zenith Satellite System-Hosted Payload program, the first national security space partnership of its kind between the United States and Japan, according to a <a href="https://www.ssc.spaceforce.mil/Newsroom/Article-Display/Article/4574476/us-space-force-and-japan-successfully-launch-us-sovereign-space-domain-awarenes" target="_blank" rel="" title="https://www.ssc.spaceforce.mil/Newsroom/Article-Display/Article/4574476/us-space-force-and-japan-successfully-launch-us-sovereign-space-domain-awarenes">recent release</a>. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The new payload will deliver near-real-time data to the Space Surveillance Network, improving the U.S. Space Force’s understanding of activities within geosynchronous orbit above the Indo-Pacific. Geosynchronous orbit, about 22,000 miles up, is where a satellite matches Earth’s rotation and remains over the same spot. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Combat Forces Command’s Mission Delta 2 will operate the sensor to identify and track objects in orbit and help operators understand potential threats or opportunities. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Japanese QZS-7, built by Mitsubishi Electric in Kamakura, Japan, is part of a constellation that primarily augments GPS signals over Japan and the surrounding region. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Lincoln Laboratory designed and built both U.S. payloads for the program. Space Force and laboratory teams worked with Japanese partners for two years to integrate and test the second sensor with its host satellite. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“The successful launch of QZS-7 is a powerful testament to the enduring strength and rapid modernization of the U.S.-Japan alliance,” Col. Bryon McClain, Space Force portfolio acquisition executive for Space Combat Power, said in the release.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“By continuing to merge our capabilities in space modernization and satellite communications, we are maintaining security in a contested space domain and fortifying our shared deterrence capabilities across the Indo-Pacific region,” he continued. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Col. Gina Peterson, deputy commander of Mission Delta 2, said the program helps the Space Force meet threats from peer adversaries and build “resilient capabilities to detect, understand, and maintain custody of objects in deep space.” </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The first sensor <a href="https://www.ssc.spaceforce.mil/Newsroom/Article/4065357/us-space-forces-space-systems-command-and-japan-launch-first-bilateral-space-ef" target="_blank" rel=""><u>launched in February 2025</u></a> on QZS-6. Mission Delta 2 runs both payloads through the Multi-Mission Space Operations Center/Enterprise Command and Control-Schriever enclave in Colorado. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The U.S.-Japan partnership on this program began with a December 2020 agreement between the Space Force and Japan’s National Space Policy Secretariat. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Brig. Gen. Brian Denaro, commander of U.S. Space Forces Pacific, called the alliance one of the nation’s greatest strategic advantages in the Pacific and said the program demonstrates how the two countries enhance security across the region through collaboration from design through launch. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Task Force Falcon Strike will utilize one-way attack drones composed of unmanned systems from above, on and below the sea, managed by U.S. military support staff and regional partners, according to a <a href="https://www.centcom.mil/MEDIA/PUBLIC-RELEASES/Article/4573159/centcom-launches-first-ever-multinational-attack-drone-task-force/" target="_blank" rel="">Thursday release</a>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The move to launch this unit follows CENTCOM’s establishment of <a href="https://www.militarytimes.com/unmanned/2025/12/04/centcom-launches-new-suicide-drone-attack-force-in-middle-east/" target="_blank" rel="">Task Force Scorpion Strike</a> in December 2025, a Middle East-based task force equipped with one-way attack drones as the military strived to integrate drone technology across the services. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Task Force Falcon Strike will expand on Scorpion Strike’s success given the tremendous innovation happening among our regional allies and partners,” Adm. Brad Cooper, CENTCOM commander, said in the release. “Integrating and deploying our new capabilities together will help us rapidly realize the new possibilities that are on the horizon.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Scorpion Strike was the first to launch an aerial attack drone from a U.S. Navy warship last December, the month of its announcement. The unit also deployed one-way unmanned aerial systems during Operation Epic Fury and during strikes on Iranian port facilities in July with unmanned attack vessels at sea, the statement highlights.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">CENTCOM began consulting with and officially inviting regional partners to join Falcon Strike, aiming to expand attack-drone capabilities across the Middle East into a “unified multi-domain, multinational deterrent.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“The United States military has a lot of strong partnerships and friends in the region,” Cooper said. “We are collectively stronger when we integrate and deploy new capabilities together.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The release did not specify which regional partners CENTCOM is working with on the unit.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Personnel from the U.S. Special Operations Command Central, located at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida, will lead Falcon Strike’s staff of U.S. and regional representatives after it launched Scorpion Strike, the release states.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The announcement comes as the U.S. continues its war with Iran, which has depleted the U.S. <a href="https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2026/07/30/iran-war-depleted-us-patriot-missile-stockpiles-creating-readiness-challenges-experts-say/" target="_blank" rel="">munitions stockpile</a> and caused military leaders to weigh the possibility of developing cheaper <a href="https://www.militarytimes.com/industry/techwatch/2026/05/19/pentagon-inks-500-million-deal-with-perennial-autonomy-for-counter-drone-tech/?contentFeatureId=f0fmoahPVC2AbfL-2-1-8&amp;contentQuery=%7B%22includeSections%22%3A%22%2Fhome%22%2C%22excludeSections%22%3A%22%22%2C%22feedSize%22%3A10%2C%22feedOffset%22%3A5%7D" target="_blank" rel="">anti-drone technology</a> at a faster pace.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A Maryland Air Force base was selected to receive nearly 30 HH-60W helicopters as a replacement for the base’s existing <a href="https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2026/07/14/air-force-uh-1n-helicopter-makes-emergency-landing-in-dc-after-crew-hears-vibrations-in-flight/" target="_blank" rel="">UH-1N “Huey”</a> helicopters. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, will receive 26 HH-60Ws, an advanced combat search and rescue helicopter, to replace their 26 UH-1N medium utility helicopters, according to a <a href="https://www.af.mil/News/Article-Display/Article/4568830/joint-base-andrews-to-gain-hh-60w-5th-helicopter-squadron-to-support-contingenc/" target="_blank" rel="">Wednesday release</a>. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As part of the transition to the <a href="https://www.lockheedmartin.com/en-us/products/sikorsky-hh-60w-combat-rescue-helicopter.html" target="_blank" rel="">HH-60W “Whiskey,”</a> the base will gain 60 active-duty manpower positions, per the statement.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">JBA will stand up the 5th Helicopter Squadron on Aug. 27 as the first unit on base to receive the new helicopters. The 1st Helicopter Squadron will continue to fly the Hueys until it converts to the Whiskey mission. The release did not specify when that switch would occur.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Both squadrons are tasked with supporting contingency response operations for the federal government, defense support of civil authorities and senior leadership transportation, according to the announcement.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The announcement comes a month after a UH-1N Huey from JBA’s 1st Helicopter Squadron made an emergency landing in Washington, D.C., after the crew reported “vibrating mechanical sounds” while in flight. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“The current <a href="https://www.af.mil/About-Us/Fact-Sheets/Display/Article/104464/uh-1n-huey/" target="_blank" rel="">UH-1N fleet</a> is 49 to 59 years old and lacks the speed, range, and lift capacity required to provide cost-effective, modern mission support,” the release states.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“The HH-60W delivers significant increases in payload capacity, maximum airspeed, and mission range to ensure the aircraft can meet tasked mission requirements,” the statement continues.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Operational capability of the HH-60Ws is slated for 2030, the release says.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The U.S. Air Force should treat <a href="https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2026/05/11/air-force-experimenting-with-using-ai-for-promotion-boards/" target="_blank" rel="">artificial intelligence</a> as a readiness issue across <a href="https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2026/04/29/air-force-releases-plan-to-recruit-retain-ai-professionals/" target="_blank" rel="">critical career fields</a>, instead of just technical specialists, a public policy institute argues.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As warfare continues to be <a href="https://www.militarytimes.com/industry/techwatch/2026/07/17/let-the-ai-do-it-former-air-force-secretary-pits-machine-against-human-operators/" target="_blank" rel="">shaped by AI</a>, autonomy and cyber operations, the Department of the Air Force should invest in targeted “just-in-time” training for officer and warrant officer airmen and guardians, according to a <a href="https://www.rand.org/pubs/perspectives/PEA4950-1.html" target="_blank" rel="">Tuesday report</a> published by the <a href="https://www.rand.org/" target="_blank" rel="">RAND Corporation</a>, a nonprofit research institute based in Arlington, Virginia.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“In an era of constrained resources, technological fluency may increasingly need to be treated as a core element of warfighter readiness, not a niche skill or one-time educational requirement,” the report reads.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The training should focus on AI, data literacy and cyber-enabled operations, according to RAND. The authors argue that the framework could also be applied to enlisted and civilian personnel down the line to offer a force-wide approach to AI integration.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A “stackable, scaffolded continuous” training through a certificate model in AI and advanced technologies could be beneficial to officers because it allows for a measurable pathway for technology fluency and tailors training while reducing costs to the department, per the report. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Stackable certificates can be incorporated into the department’s existing training and education systems through implementing the programs tailored to career fields and mission areas that need a technological skill set as well as updating professional military education, or PME, curricula to include the stackable certificates, according to the report. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“As AI and advanced technologies increasingly shape military effectiveness, airmen and guardians must be prepared not only to operate alongside these capabilities but also to lead with them,” the authors say.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A <a href="https://www.dol.gov/node/160359" target="_blank" rel="">stackable certificate</a> is part of a sequence of credentials that can be built up over time to increase an individual’s qualifications and allow them to work up a career ladder, according to the Department of Labor.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A lack of assessments of stackable certificates in military or government organizations leads the authors to recommend pilot programs and outcome assessments before implementing stackable certificate programs at scale.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The paper argues that the use of stackable certificates in training and existing PME is well aligned with the department’s reestablished warrant officer group.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“WOs can leverage stackable certificates to complete ongoing training on AI, advanced technologies, cyber capabilities, and other mission-specific requirements while assigned to their units and performing their standard duties,” the report says.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The authors recommend that the department assess whether ongoing and advanced technical training fits within the realm of service members’ primary responsibilities and in which method it can best be delivered. The department should also consider updating promotion and assignment processes to take the stackable certificates into account to better retain talent and support career growth. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Boeing revealed an ultra-low-cost radar seeker Tuesday as this year’s <a href="https://smdsymposium.org/" target="_blank" rel="">Space and Missile Defense Symposium</a> kicked off in Huntsville, Alabama, pitching it as a way to get missile guidance on more weapons for less money.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Installed in the nose of a missile or bomb, the seeker locates the target and guides the weapon toward it. Seekers are among the most expensive parts of a guided weapon, and Boeing’s argument is that their cost is what limits how many the military can buy.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Boeing’s Ultra Low-Cost Seeker, or ULCS, is an active seeker, meaning it emits its own radar signal rather than relying on one from an aircraft or a ground station. Boeing built it largely from commercial parts adapted for military use, and it is still in development.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The company said it is looking at using the ULCS in its air and missile defense interceptors, its guided bombs and its cruise missiles, because its design allows for reuse across all three rather than requiring a different seeker for each weapon.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Boeing said the seeker is designed for strikes from the air, land or at sea, in any weather and against moving targets. The company ran several tests on the ULCS earlier this summer. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Engineers checked the sensor design in an anechoic chamber, which absorbs stray signal reflections. The seeker also flew aboard a Beechcraft 1900 over land and water, where Boeing said it found and tracked targets as expected.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At Spaceport America in New Mexico, the seeker tracked a passing drone from a fixed position on the ground. Boeing then mounted it on a rocket standing in for a missile and launched it at a second drone carrying a reflector, which bounced radar back as a full-size target would. Boeing said the seeker survived the acceleration and vibration of every test, and detected and tracked its targets each time.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Reuse across weapons is the major selling point, according to Boeing. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“We are developing ULCS with the goal of sharing a common sensor architecture across several of our programs,” said Bob Ciesla, vice president of Boeing Precision Engagement Systems. He said the seeker is modular and built to an open standard so Boeing can fit it to different weapons and change it later without redesigning it.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Boeing already builds seekers for other weapons, some of them for competitors. The company makes the active radar seeker for the Lockheed Martin PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement interceptor and said it drew on that work for ULCS while aiming to build something cheaper for use against less sophisticated threats.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Steve Wright, Boeing’s senior manager for weapon sensors and advanced guidance, said work remains to be done.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“We still have more work to do, but the rapid testing our teams have completed prove[s] that this capability is real and will fundamentally change how we look at seeker affordability across our programs,” he said.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Boeing said its teams are studying the test data and using the results to shape the next round of work, including several flight tests in 2027 that will attempt to more closely replicate real-world scenarios.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Boeing is not alone in its attempts to exploit modularity. On Aug. 10, <a href="https://www.defensenews.com/news/your-military/2026/08/11/lockheed-martin-launches-modular-missile-tech-with-dedicated-storefront/" target="_blank" rel="">Lockheed Martin announced Strigo</a>, a line of radio-frequency sensors, missile datalinks and seeker technologies built around the same modular premise, designed to serve a variety of weapons.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Boeing did not say whether its ULCS is being funded internally or attached to any existing funded weapons program. Nor did it say just how ultra-low the cost of its new seeker will be.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A C-17 Globemaster III that was facing two years out of service is airborne again after the U.S. Air Force <a href="https://www.aflcmc.af.mil/NEWS/Article/4563878/rapid-sustainment-office-produces-first-of-its-kind-part-to-repair-damaged-c-17/" target="_blank" rel="">built a replacement part itself</a>, using a robot.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The airlifter, tail number 01-0194, assigned to <a href="https://www.wpafb.af.mil/Units/445AW/" target="_blank" rel="">the 445th Airlift Wing at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio</a>, was parked overnight at Perot Field Fort Worth Alliance Airport in Texas on March 4, 2025, when severe storms and microbursts of up to 80 mph sent two private Bombardier Challenger jets careening into it.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.wfaa.com/video/news/local/tarrant-county/heavy-winds-tuesday-morning-push-two-jets-into-c-17-perot-field-fort-worth/287-50aac1e1-d2cf-4769-b6e0-ce8ce946e89c" target="_blank" rel="">Video shot that morning</a> showed one of the business jets come to rest beneath the C-17’s wing. The same storm system damaged numerous aircraft at airports across the metroplex.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The collision damaged the C-17’s left-side door, fuselage and nose. The crew flew it home with a Boeing-qualified and Air Force-approved temporary nose panel and landing gear down.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Back in Ohio, maintainers repaired the door and fuselage but determined the left nose panel had to be replaced, which is where the job stalled.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Boeing was unable to find a vendor willing to build tooling for a single nose panel, according to the Air Force. After an unsuccessful repair attempt, the jet was looking at a year in storage followed by another year of repair work, sidelining one of only nine C-17s the wing counts as mission-essential.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The wing turned to the Air Force Rapid Sustainment Office (RSO), a Life Cycle Management Center division at Wright-Patterson that hunts for ways to fabricate parts the supply chain can’t deliver.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Engineers there deemed the panel a good candidate for incremental sheet forming, or ISF, in which a robot presses a flat metal sheet into shape a little at a time. Because the machine follows a digital path rather than a mold, tooling is unnecessary.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Working with the <a href="https://udri.udayton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="">University of Dayton Research Institute</a>, the team began production in January 2026. Boeing, along with maintainers from the wing, installed the finished panel in July, and 01-0194 took to the skies again July 30, nearly 17 months after the storm.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“This is a tremendous win for our maintenance group,” Col. Karen Gharst, the 445th Maintenance Group commander, said in a statement. “Using the ISF technology to rapidly produce an otherwise unobtainable part allowed us to avoid a prolonged work stoppage.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The event marks the first incrementally formed part to fly on an Air Force aircraft. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Boeing closed the C-17 line in 2015, and the Air Force expects to fly the fleet into the 2070s, meaning this may not be the last time the service has to hunt for parts nobody makes anymore.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The RSO is currently working on parts for a KC-135 and an F-15.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The U.S. Air Force has committed $75 million to an initial production run of a jet-powered guided bomb that can fly more than 300 nautical miles, <a href="https://boeing.mediaroom.com/news-releases-statements?item=131704" target="_blank" rel="">Boeing said Wednesday</a>. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Boeing’s BSU-111/B Payload Delivery Unit is a wing-and-turbojet engine kit that converts a 500-pound Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) into a long-range JDAM (JDAM LR) dubbed the GBU-75. The result is a gravity bomb with the reach of a cruise missile. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Boeing said it has spent nearly $100 million of its own money on the program. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Scaling production of the GBU-75 will provide the fleet with an affordable, sustainable solution designed to eliminate long-range land and sea-based threats to U.S. and international forces,” said Bob Ciesla, vice president of Boeing Precision Engagement Systems.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The BSU-111/B wing-and-engine kit is the latest modification to the JDAM family, which has previously seen the gravity bomb receive a <a href="https://www.janes.com/defence-intelligence-insights/defence-news/weapons/boeing-jdam-lr-offers-long-range-standoff-option-for-precision-guided-munition-and-cruise-missile-inventories" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer" title="https://www.janes.com/defence-intelligence-insights/defence-news/weapons/boeing-jdam-lr-offers-long-range-standoff-option-for-precision-guided-munition-and-cruise-missile-inventories">tail kit that steered it roughly 15 nautical miles</a> and a wing kit that further stretched that distance to 40. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Kratos-designed TDI-J85 engine pushes that past 300.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The JDAM LR’s capabilities go beyond land strikes. The <a href="https://news.usni.org/2026/04/22/navy-tests-long-range-munition-capable-of-maritime-strike-mining-missions" target="_blank" rel="">QuickStrike Long Range mining variant</a> pairs it with a bomb carrying a ship-tracking sensor. Boeing has shown concepts loading large numbers onto Air Force bombers, though no Air Force buy has been announced.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Air Force Life Cycle Management Center at Hill Air Force Base, Utah, buys JDAM for both the Air Force and U.S. Navy. The first GBU-75s are bound for the Navy. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Navy demonstrated the weapon back in April, when <a href="https://breakingdefense.com/2026/04/navy-tests-long-range-jdam-striking-out-to-200-nautical-miles/" target="_blank" rel="">Super Hornets released two JDAM LRs</a> over the Point Mugu Sea Range off California. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The April 1 round separated cleanly, fired up its engine and flew 34 minutes before landing within meters of its target. The April 3 round added altitude changes and maneuvering. Each covered roughly 200 nautical miles. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When announcing those tests in April, <a href="https://www.navalnews.com/event-news/sea-air-space-2026/2026/04/u-s-navy-tests-new-long-range-gbu-75-jdam-lr/" target="_blank" rel="">Capt. Sarah Abbott, the Navy’s Precision Strike Weapons program manager</a>, emphasized the need to give the fleet’s JDAMs greater standoff range.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“As Naval Air Forces in theater continue to rely heavily on JDAM systems, the program recognizes a critical need to provide the fleet with greater standoff range,” she said. “This new capability allows pilots to engage targets from significantly safer distances, maintaining a tactical advantage in contested environments.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Reusing existing infrastructure is a key aspect of the program’s appeal. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.secnav.navy.mil/fmc/fmb/Documents/27pres/PANMC_Book.pdf" target="_blank" rel="">Navy budget documents</a> describe JDAM LR as a modification to the baseline program, built on the existing production line and guidance hardware. Any jet that can drop a conventional JDAM can carry the new variant without modification, according to Boeing’s release.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The award, which <a href="https://www.war.gov/News/Contracts/Contract/Article/4564890/contracts-for-aug-5-2026/" target="_blank" rel="">had not appeared in the Pentagon’s daily contract announcements</a> as of Aug. 5, is an undefinitized action, meaning Boeing began work before the two sides agreed on a price. The Government Accountability Office has long <a href="https://www.gao.gov/products/gao-10-299" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer" title="https://www.gao.gov/products/gao-10-299">called these contracts risky</a> because contractors are reimbursed for allowable costs, regardless.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Boeing’s release did not say how many GBU-75s the contract buys, how much they cost or when deliveries begin.</p>
