Those who wish to honor the helicopter pilots and crew members killed in Vietnam can do so on April 18 at Arlington National Cemetery.

After four years, these service members will have their own monument at the Virginia cemetery.

The Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association spearheaded the effort, working with Arlington National Cemetery and Congress to get the monument approved.

At first, the cemetery was hesitant because of the ever-shrinking space for grave sites, but supporters of the monument wrote to Congress and gained attention. Eventually, a compromise was made, and the cemetery approved the monument.

The Vietnam Helicopter Pilot and Crewmember Monument will be placed in Section 35 along Memorial Drive, not far from the Tomb of the Unknowns. It honors the nearly 5,000 helicopter pilots and crew members who were killed during the Vietnam War.

The war was known as the “helicopter war” because the United States relied heavily on the aircraft to transport troops and provide close-air support.

The dedication on April 18 at 4 p.m. Eastern time is open to anyone who wants to attend and will feature Vietnam veterans along with Gold Star families.

Event highlights include speeches, a wreath laying and a flyover.

Retired Air Force Lt. Col. Bob Hesselbein, who flew AH-1 Cobra gunships in Vietnam, said there should be a balance in Arlington National Cemetery.

“I think the American people expect Arlington to be a combination of grave sites and memorials such as this,” Hesselbein told Army Times.

The association originally designed the monument with a front-facing view of a Bell UH-1 Iroquois, commonly referred to as a Huey.

The Commission of Fine Arts suggested the design show the side view of a helicopter so it was more recognizable.

“Although everyone living today will be immediately able to say, ‘That’s a helicopter coming toward us,’ in 200 years from now, they might not know what that is,” Hesselbein said. “[The commission] really viewed it through a long-range lens.”

Hesselbein said the association has been in contact with families of those pilots and crew members who were killed in Vietnam.

“It used to be parents, but now it’s the siblings and the children who are going to be at the dedication,” he said. “We have been stunned by the growing enthusiasm and what we think is going to be an amazing attendance level.”

‘We just didn’t talk about it’

Julie Kink first discovered the Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association while trying to find information about her brother.

Kink was 8 when her 19-year-old brother David died after his helicopter crash in Vietnam in 1969.

“I grew up not really knowing too much about my brother because of our age difference,” Kink told Army Times. “I always wanted to find out more about what he did in Vietnam. What kind of person was he?”

She discovered the association in 1996 and has been attending reunions and volunteering ever since.

“That led to me finding some of the guys who trained with David and flew with him,” Kink said.

The Vietnam War is known as the helicopter war. (Army)

Kink assumed she was the last person to learn details about the Vietnam War, but she soon realized that wasn’t the case.

“As families of Vietnam losses, for most of us the story is almost always the same,” she said. “We just didn’t talk about it. We had no connections and no way to find out anything more.”

It was “neat to be welcomed and to be in a reunion of guys who are celebrating the good things that they did,” she said.

Kink, who will speak during the dedication ceremony, said the monument is not just for the pilots and crew members who were lost in Vietnam, but for the troops who survived and came back.

“The bond between the guys who were aviators in Vietnam and the men that they lost is incredibly strong,” Kink said. “They loved them the same that we families loved them.”

Kink uses the association’s database of pilots who were killed or missing in action to track down any remaining family members.

“It’s not 100 percent complete, but I use that database and look for online tributes, parents’ obituaries that would give indication of siblings and where they live now,” she said.

By doing this, Kink found a family connection for more than 1,000 of the pilots who were killed. At the moment, there’s no database for crew members.

The dedication ceremony is going to be “electric,” with veterans, family members and friends all sitting together, she said.

“I hope [people] will realize that it’s okay to talk about Vietnam,” Kink said. “That we can remember and grieve simultaneously as we celebrate those guys’ lives and what they did.”

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick continued his preseason protest by taking a knee during the national anthem before his team’s game against the San Diego Chargers Thursday night.

His invited guest, a former Green Beret, stood tall.

Nate Boyer, whose open letter to Kaepernick at ArmyTimes.com included his desire to hear the quarterback out, got his wish before the game. He spoke with Kaepernick for about 90 minutes, according to Jay Glazer, longtime Fox NFL reporter and founder of Merging Vets and Players, a charity in which Boyer is an active member.

Boyer labeled it a “good talk” in a Twitter post featuring a photo of the two men.

Boyer was invited onto the sidelines by the quarterback and the 49ers, Glazer reported. The former staff sergeant, who was in camp with the Seattle Seahawks as a long snapper before being released prior to the 2015 regular season, stood with his hand over his heart during the anthem. Kaepernick and teammate Eric Reed took a knee.

The gesture came during Salute to the Military night at San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium. Service members in uniform lined the field during pregame festivities, and at least one veteran besides Boyer made his thoughts clear to Kaepernick before kickoff.

When the quarterback left the field following pregame warmups, he was greeted with profanity and obscene gestures from Leo Uzcategui, a 20-year Navy veteran in a military-green Chargers jersey with quarterback Philip Rivers’ No. 17 in camouflage numbering.

“I was in the Navy and I saw men and women bleed and die for this flag,” Uzcategui said. “If he wants to do something, go to some outreach program where he can do some good. And I get it, his First Amendment right. But you don’t sit during the presenting of the colors, and you don’t sit during the national anthem. That is not the way to do it.”

In Oakland, Seahawks cornerback Jeremy Lane also sat on the bench behind his standing teammates as the national anthem was performed before Seattle’s game against the Raiders.

Kaepernick has said he doesn’t intend his stance to be a criticism of the military, claiming he has “great respect for the men and women that have fought for this country.”

Kaepernick’s social activism, which only emerged publicly in recent weeks, also included support for the Black Lives Matter movement through social media.

While negative reaction to the quarterback has been strong, Kaepernick also has been widely praised for his commitment to his stance. Veterans and military members tweeted their support for Kaepernick in recent days under the hashtag #VeteransForKaepernick.

Jim Brown voiced support for Kaepernick while disagreeing with his method of protest. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar called Kaepernick’s decision “highly patriotic” while encouraging him to take further steps to build dialogue between law enforcement and blacks.

Amid the uproar of his emerging social activism, Kaepernick is still trying to win a job with the 49ers less than four years after leading them to the Super Bowl. The quarterback lost the starting job last season, and he hasn’t separated himself from Blaine Gabbert this summer under new coach Chip Kelly.

A retired Army colonel and West Point graduate marked his 521st day in space Wednesday, setting a record for American astronauts.

And as a bonus, he beat Navy to do it. Sort of.

Jeff Williams (USMA Class of ’80) will wrap up his time on the International Space Station in about two weeks, set to come home with 534 cumulative days off-planet spread over four missions. Scott Kelly, a retired Navy captain, set the old record at the conclusion of his most recent mission, during which he spent nearly a year in space. Kelly returned in early March; Williams launched later that month.

“I think we would all agree that it is an honor to spend any day in space,” Williams said during a June interview with NASA. “And certainly, to have accumulated that time is truly an honor for me.”

He joked during an Army Times interview in March 2015 about reaching the one-year mark in space, a milestone he cracked just days after launch.

“Sometimes I forget my own birthday, so [it] probably won’t be a big deal,” Williams said in a phone interview from Russia’s Star City, where he was serving as a backup member for Kelly’s year-in-space launch. “It is a significant milestone, I don’t take that for granted.”

Williams served as an Army aviator before his becoming a member of NASA’s 1996 astronaut class. His first flight came in May 2000, when he served as flight engineer and lead spacewalker aboard the space shuttle Atlantis. He made two visits to the ISS (March-September 2006, September 2009-March 2010) prior to his current stay.

Jeff Williams, a retired Army colonel, floats aboard the International Space Station in August, just before setting the U.S. space longevity record.

The mission included a Friday spacewalk to install a docking adapter to the ISS that will allow commercially launched craft to dock at the station.

The trip is scheduled to end with a Sept. 6 landing in Kazakhstan. The station won’t go without a West Point representative for long: Retired Col. Shane Kimbrough (USMA ’89) is set to launch from Kazakhstan on Sept. 23 as part of a three-man crew.

Williams remains well short of the all-time space-longevity record of 879 days, held by Russian cosmonaut Gennady Padalka. Padalka returned from the ISS in September 2015 after launching with Kelly in March. He’s been to space five times, including a trip to the Mir space station in 1998.

TACOMA, Wash. — The Army says an “unprecedented” manufacturing defect led to the death of a soldier who died during a parachute training operation in September.

Capt. James Ahn of California died Sept. 11 during the Washington operation. The 29-year-old soldier was stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. The News Tribune reports that the defect in Ahn’s pack’s reserve parachute had gone unnoticed over four years of use and Ahn likely misidentified which parachute had malfunctioned, losing what little time he had to land safely.

An investigation into his death found that the manufacturer had failed to stitch a 4-inch ring that guides parachute cords onto the pack, an error so obscure it took experts four days to identify it.

Ahn’s death was the first parachute-related fatality for a JBLM unit since 2005.
