The roofer had been recommended by others, so Cole wasn\u2019t expecting a shoddy job that ended up failing inspection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cole had reached out to another contractor, <a href=\"http:\/\/dandmroofing.com\/\" target=_blank>D&amp;M Roofing<\/a>, to fix his siding. When he mentioned to a D&amp;M rep that his roof was in bad shape, D&amp;M owner\/president Eric Oberembt came out to take a look.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/home-hq\/va-loan-center\/2017\/12\/18\/what-va-loan-users-should-do-when-natural-disasters-strike\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"159\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-890677322.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">What VA loan users should do when natural disasters strike<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">From insurance to address changes, what needs done as the dust settles.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oberembt, who has been in the family business for more than two decades, told Home HQ that he was \u201cfairly shocked at the poor workmanship that somebody did.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI kind of went to Ricky and was like, \u2018Hey, man, there\u2019s a lot of issues up here, and I don\u2019t feel comfortable doing a repair on it, because then I\u2019m going to own it, and I\u2019m not sure it\u2019s going to perform properly,\u201d Oberembt said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He told Cole he\u2019d make some stopgap fixes for the roof and \u201cmake some phone calls\u201d about a permanent solution. Who\u2019d you guys use?\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cAnd that, to me, is really the best way. You just grab names out of a phone book or look online or whatever &#8230; everybody pays for Google ad words. You\u2019re going to find a lot of people you don\u2019t want to find.\u201c<\/li><li><b>Research, but be wary. <\/b>The Better Business Bureau is a common starting point for those seeking contractors, but it\u2019s not a one-stop shop, Oberembt said. While BBB-accredited companies must adhere to certain standards, the bureau doesn\u2019t review or endorse their products or services.<\/li><li><b>Hit the middle. <\/b>\u201cNo contractor out there is every going to say to go with the cheapest bid\u201d from a selection of offers, Oberembt said. \u201cThe cheapest guy? There\u2019s a reason that guy is the cheapest guy. &#8230; Usually, the honest guy is the guy in the middle.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A storm, a fix gone
