Chris Karns, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/opinion\/commentary\/2018\/05\/29\/innovation-an-enduring-need-for-mobility-enterprise\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Air Mobility Command<\/a> spokesman, told Air Force Times in an email Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This caused the crew to evacuate via a fire department truck ladder, Karns said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/06\/05\/air-force-reports-three-emergency-aircraft-landings-in-one-week\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/3570010.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Air Force reports three emergency aircraft landings in one week<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">A U.S. Air Force KC-10 Extender aircraft made an emergency landing at Shannon Airport, Ireland, Sunday.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force tested slide-raft deployments on other KC-10s to see if the failure was an isolated incident or something that required additional assessment. Four failed deployments occurred \u2014 two during the May 20 incident, one at Travis Air Force Base in California and a fourth on a McGuire KC-10 in depot, Karns said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A stand-down isn\u2019t required, however, because crews are trained on secondary egress techniques involving ropes. KC-10s have three escape ropes for such emergencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Air Mobility Command is working with engineers to assess the situation and find a solution, Karns said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AMC is using preliminary risk assessment data to standardize operational procedures until a fix is delivered. This won\u2019t disrupt the KC-10\u2032s main mission of aerial refueling, Karns said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, Space-A travel has been reduced for flights on the KC-10 at
