But Turkish students learning to maintain the F-35 at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, will be able to complete their training, a base spokeswoman has confirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last Friday, U.S. Defense Department leaders announced a path to \u201cunwind\u201d Turkey\u2019s participation in the F-35 program amid a dispute about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/congress\/2019\/04\/09\/top-us-lawmakers-demand-turkey-choose-between-americas-f-35-and-russias-s-400\/\" target=_blank>Ankara\u2019s planned purchase of the S-400<\/a>, a Russian air defense system that Pentagon officials worry could compromise the security of the F-35.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/air\/2019\/06\/07\/turkish-suppliers-to-be-eliminated-from-f-35-program-in-2020\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-638257966.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Turkish suppliers to be eliminated from F-35 program in 2020<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Most of the work would go toward U.S. firms &#8230; at least at first.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The initial plan, laid out by acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan, would have allowed Turkish F-35 pilots to continue training at Luke Air Force Base, Arizona, as long as they leave the country by July 31.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, Brig. Gen. Todd Canterbury, commander of the base\u2019s 56th Wing, opted to pause training for Turkish pilots due to concerns about their access to sensitive information, <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2019\/06\/10\/fighter-jet-turkey-pentagon-u-s-grounds-turkish-f-35-pilots\/\" target=_blank>according to Foreign Policy<\/a>, which was the first to report the information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those same concerns do not exist at Eglin Air Force Base, which is responsible for the initial training of foreign F-35 maintainers, because foreign maintainers do not have access to classified data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe 33rd Fighter Wing is complying with the secretary of defense\u2019s memo of having all Turkish training completed by July 31,\u201d said Lt. Savannah Stephens, chief of public affairs for Eglin\u2019s 33rd Fighter Wing. \u201cWe have no concerns about the current students finishing their training, as everything they do here is on an FOUO [for official use only] or unclassified level, and they only work with training devices.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All current jet mechanic students are scheduled to graduate on July 24 and 27, and the Turkish leadership team will leave on July 29, Stephens said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are currently 42 Turkish pilots and maintainers total training at Luke and Eglin. The July 31 deadline would allow 28 of them to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/smr\/nato-priorities\/2018\/06\/21\/turkey-gets-first-f-35-as-congress-put-pressure-on-pentagon-to-stop-future-deliveries\/\" target=_blank>complete their training<\/a>, but the remainder would be sent home before their training naturally concludes, according to information attached to Shanahan\u2019s letter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe department is aware that the Turkish pilots at Luke AFB are not flying,\u201d said Lt. Col. Mike Andrews, a Defense Department spokesman. \u201cWithout a change in Turkish policy, we will continue to work closely with our Turkish ally on winding down their participation in the F-35 program.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A department source added that Canterbury did not intend to counter Shanahan\u2019s plan by ordering an operational pause, and that the decision was driven by \u201csafety.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last week, Ellen Lord, the Pentagon\u2019s acquisition executive, said that all actions underway to remove Turkey from the F-35 program would stop if Ankara cancels its S-400 order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTurkey still has the option to change course. If Turkey does not accept delivery of the S-400, we will enable Turkey to return to normal F-35 program activities,\u201d she told reporters
