So this city is stepping in."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Student veterans in New York City who are at risk of being evicted from their homes because of <a href=\"https:\/\/rebootcamp.militarytimes.com\/news\/education\/2018\/09\/27\/no-end-in-sight-for-gi-bill-payment-problems\/\" target=_blank>delayed GI Bill payments<\/a> from Veterans Affairs are getting a little extra help from the city\u2019s government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mayor Bill de Blasio\u2019s administration announced a multi-agency effort this week to streamline emergency rent relief for student veterans who rely on the Post-9\/11 GI Bill housing stipend to pay for rent. According to a news release from the mayor\u2019s office, this includes most of the city\u2019s 12,000 student veterans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur nation owes our veterans a debt of gratitude for their service. At the very least, those who bravely served our country are owed the benefits promised to them by the federal government,\u201d de Blasio said in the release. \u201cNew York City is stepping up to give student veterans the security they need to stay in their homes while they wait for the federal benefits they earned through service to our country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The administration has sent out <a href=\"https:\/\/www1.nyc.gov\/assets\/veterans\/downloads\/pdf\/Letter_StudentVetsGIBill_20181025.pdf\" target=_blank>information to schools<\/a> that lays out how, and where, students can apply for rent assistance through the Department of Social Services. Meanwhile, legislation that could have helped these students is stalled in the Senate, and veteran education advocates along with members of Congress are calling for action.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New Yorkers aren\u2019t the only ones reeling from unpaid education benefits. Students all over the country have been impacted by a large backlog of claims at the VA, partly due to the agency missing a key Aug. 1 deadline to update its technology systems that were <a href=\"https:\/\/rebootcamp.militarytimes.com\/news\/education\/2018\/09\/04\/this-gi-bill-change-was-supposed-to-take-effect-aug-1-it-still-hasnt-happened\/\" target=_blank>supposed to change the way housing stipends were calculated<\/a> under the new <a href=\"https:\/\/rebootcamp.militarytimes.com\/education-transition\/education\/2017\/08\/16\/trump-signed-the-forever-gi-bill-here-are-11-things-you-should-know\/\" target=_blank>Forever GI Bill<\/a> law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A VA spokesman told Military Times in an email last week that as of Oct. 24, the agency had 120,000 education claims pending, most of which were for Post-9\/11 GI Bill payments. Approximately 1,200 claims have been pending for 60 days or more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Original claims for first-time GI Bill users are taking an average of 33 days to process, and supplement claims are averaging 23 days, he said.
