{"id":15373,"date":"2018-02-01T03:41:51","date_gmt":"2018-02-01T03:41:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/02\/01\/air-force-grounds-all-t-6-flights-after-multiple-hypoxia-like-problems\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T20:21:22","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T20:21:22","slug":"air-force-grounds-all-t-6-flights-after-multiple-hypoxia-like-problems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/02\/01\/air-force-grounds-all-t-6-flights-after-multiple-hypoxia-like-problems\/","title":{"rendered":"Air Force grounds all T-6 flights after multiple hypoxia-like problems"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/01\/31\/air-force-suspends-solo-t-6-trainer-flights-over-hypoxia-fears\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">19th Air Force<\/a> has halted all T-6 Texan II operations after a \u201ccluster\u201d of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/01\/22\/air-force-taps-brig-general-to-look-into-hypoxia-related-issues\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">unexplained physiological events<\/a> \u2014 a term used to describe conditions such as hypoxia \u2014 at three bases over the last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a release Wednesday evening, Air Education and Training Command said the problems happened at Columbus Air Force Base in Mississippi, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2017\/11\/30\/t-6as-remain-grounded-at-vance-air-force-base-after-hypoxia-scares\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Vance Air Force Base<\/a> in Oklahoma, and Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maj. Gen. Patrick Doherty, commander of the 19th Air Force, ordered the \u201coperational pause,\u201d which will begin Thursday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The release did not specify how many events have taken place, or what problems pilots experienced. But in addition to hypoxia, the Air Force has also used the term \u201cunexplained physiological event,\u201d or UPE, to describe conditions such as hypocapnia, hypercapnia, or disorientation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Such events can be dangerous, especially for pilots. Jeffrey Allen\/Air Force)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Doherty ordered the grounding to give the Air Force a chance to study the root causes of these problems, listen to the T-6 aircrew, educate them about the problems, come up with solutions, and put them into place.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/01\/09\/air-force-grounded-dozens-of-a-10s-in-november-after-hypoxia-incidents\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/a10-davis-monthan.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Air Force grounded dozens of A-10s in November after hypoxia incidents<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Two pilots reported physiological incidents while flying, and another pilot reported an incident on the ground.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe safety of our instructors and student pilots is paramount and has been our priority and focus,\u201d Doherty said. \u201cWe\u2019re acting swiftly, making temporary, but necessary, changes to everyone\u2019s training, general awareness, checklist procedures, and possibly modify aircrew flying equipment to mitigate risk to the aircrew while we tackle this issue head-on to safeguard everyone flying T-6s.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier on Wednesday, AETC confirmed that the 19th had <a href=\"\/TEMP-LINK-TEMP\/\" data-original-title=\"\" title=\"\" class=\"selected-link\" aria-describedby=\"popover631332\">suspended all solo flights in T-6s<\/a> due to concerns about hypoxia and other related problems. Doherty also authorized all T-6 pilots to fly with their masks partially unlatched to allow them to breathe cockpit air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vance temporarily suspended its T-6 flights last November after a series of hypoxia events, but was unable to find the cause of the problem and resumed flights in December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force has also created a team, headed by Brig. Gen.
