{"id":16380,"date":"2019-03-11T14:52:52","date_gmt":"2019-03-11T14:52:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/03\/11\/afsoc-gets-latest-most-advanced-ac-130j-gunship\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T20:23:10","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T20:23:10","slug":"afsoc-gets-latest-most-advanced-ac-130j-gunship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2019\/03\/11\/afsoc-gets-latest-most-advanced-ac-130j-gunship\/","title":{"rendered":"AFSOC gets latest, most advanced AC-130J gunship"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The latest version of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2017\/10\/10\/the-air-forces-newest-deadliest-gunship-just-hit-a-major-milestone\/\" target=_blank>AC-130J Ghostrider<\/a> gunship has been delivered to the 4th Special Operations Squadron.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 1st Special Operations Wing said in a news release Wednesday that the gunship is the first Block 30 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2017\/10\/10\/the-air-forces-newest-deadliest-gunship-just-hit-a-major-milestone\/\" target=_blank>Ghostrider<\/a> for Air Force Special Operations Command and U.S. Special Operations Command. It was delivered to the 4th SOS \u2014 which is based at Hurlburt Field in Florida \u2014 in a small unveiling ceremony at Bob Skies Airport in Crestview, Florida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hurlburt said in the release that the Block 30 Ghostrider has better software and avionics technology than the previous Block 20 version. In a follow-up email, Staff Sgt. Victor Caputo, spokesman for the 1st SOW, said the Block 30 version has a new sensor, updated crew seats with additional safety features, and new technology, routers and networks. Caputo also said the layout of the latest Ghostrider has been reorganized to move equipment out of the way, including installing racks to free up cargo compartment space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But while the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dote.osd.mil\/pub\/reports\/FY2017\/pdf\/af\/2017ac130j.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Pentagon previously said<\/a> the Block 30 version of the AC-130J would have the capability to carry wing-mounted AGM-114 Hellfire missiles, it is unclear whether the Ghostrider that was delivered last week does. Hellfire missiles were not included in the list of Block 30 features provided by AFSOC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And when asked whether this AC-130J could carry Hellfires, AFSOC said in a Saturday email \u201cThe AC-130J Block 30 is our most lethal aircraft in the AFSOC inventory. We have tested Hellfire missiles on earlier model gunships. Details about the weapon systems will be released as the aircraft is fully brought online through testing and evaluation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2016\/10\/25\/meet-the-air-force-s-ultimate-battle-plane-and-your-new-close-air-support\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/c-130j-1.JPG.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Meet the Air Force\u2019s \u2018ultimate battle plane\u2019 and your new close-air support<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">When it hits the battlefield in a few short years, the AC-130J Ghostrider will be the most heavily armed gunship in history \u2013 a badass plane providing close-air support to U.S. troops on the ground, and delivering withering firepower that will send enemies running for the hills.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Ghostrider will represent a major upgrade over the AC-130U Spooky currently used by the 4th SOS, which AFSOC said is the Air Force\u2019s most deployed squadron. The AC-130J can carry out the same close-air support, air interdiction and armed reconnaissance missions that the Spooky now performs, but with better avionics, navigation systems and weapons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Ghostrider\u2019s \u201cPrecision Strike Package\u201d includes trainable 30mm and 105mm weapons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The AC-130J\u2019s six-bladed turboprop engines help it operate faster and much more efficiently than the Spooky, according to AFSOC, and it burns 25 to 30 percent less gas than previous models. Brad Webb greeted the Ghostrider\u2019s aircrew at the unveiling and addressed the crowd at the airport. He accompanied the air crew on the flight from the airport to Hurlburt, and spent some time behind the controls during that flight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This Block 30 Ghostrider will be tested for a year before it can be deployed operationally, AFSOC said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force declared that the Ghostrider had reached initial operational capability in September 2017. The 73rd Special Operations Squadron at Hurlburt, which was reactivated in February 2018, was the first squadron to operate the AC-130J.
