Only a profound change in the culture, sparked by tens of thousands of seemingly small acts,\u00a0can do that.<br\/><br\/><span class=\"rte rte-comment\">Raising awareness or telling airmen to intercede doesn&#8217;t stop\u00a0all serial assaults \u2014\u00a0better coping skills do.<\/span>\u200b<br\/><br\/><span class=\"rte rte-comment\">Since announcing an overall of Air Force And <\/span>\u200bA new training regimen, adopted by the Air Force late last year,\u00a0is designed <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">wants <\/span>\u200bto give <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">a new generation of <\/span>\u200bairmen and their leaders the skills they need to begin making a difference<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">those skills<\/span>\u200b.\u00a0The Green Dot initiative, founded by psychologist Dr. Dorothy Edwards, specifically aims to empower people to demonstrate, in ways large and small, their individual commitment\u00a0to ending sexual violence.<br\/><br\/>The program operates from a simple premise. If all acts of violence motivated by the desire to assert power and intimidation \u2014 rape, sexual assault, domestic and dating violence \u00a0\u2014\u00a0were plotted on a\u00a0map, they might be envisioned as red dots. So, too,\u00a0might decisions to tolerate such violence, to look the other way.<br\/><br\/>Green dots, on the other hand, represent actions or words to counteract and prevent red dots.\u00a0Each\u00a0green dot represents a singular good decision,\u00a0behavior or attitude. It could be an airman\u2019s choice to directly intervene in an uncomfortable situation, or something as minimal as posting a sexual assault prevention message on one&#8217;s Facebook page or sliding a piece of paper under a commander\u2019s door telling him another airman is, or has been, at risk.<br\/><br\/><span class=\"rte rte-comment\">The training, which can range from 90 minutes to four hours, is the initiative known as Green Dot, founded by psychologist Dr. Dorothy Edwards, who worked 12 years on the program.<\/span>\u200b<br\/><br\/><span class=\"rte rte-comment\">The idea is simple: A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livethegreendot.com\/gd_overview.html\">green dot represents a singular, good decision<\/a> that can stop rape, assault, domestic or dating violence from happening. It can be an airman\u2019s choice to directly intervene in an uncomfortable situation, or something as minimal as sliding a piece of paper under a commander\u2019s door telling him another airman is, or has been, at risk.<\/span>\u200b<br\/><br\/>Senior leaders at the Pentagon, including Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James,\u00a0were the latest group to receive Green Dot sexual assault and anti-violence training, and Air Force Times was invited to the Tuesday session for an exclusive look<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">\u00a0on Tuesday, including Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James. Air Force Times got an exclusive look into the training<\/span>\u200b.\u00a0<br\/><br\/>&#8220;My ultimate goal is to prevent sexual assault and violence of all sorts,&#8221; James said. &#8220;This is an evidence-based approach that we are now taking on board, and we are going to try it<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">,<\/span>\u200b and track it over time.&#8221;<br\/><br\/><span class=\"rte rte-comment\">Time is what the Air Force needs to see results.\u00a0<\/span>\u200b<br\/><br\/>The initiative, which cost the Air Force $1.6 million, launched <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">on <\/span>\u200bOct.<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">ober<\/span>\u200b 1. Green Dot etcetera, the name of the company, has trained <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">sent about 10 members of its education team to train The Air Force trained <\/span>\u200b1,500 volunteer instructors, known as implementers and coordinators of the Green Dot program in the Air Force, said Col. Mark Ramsey, division chief for operations, training, and research and analysis at the Air Force Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office.\u00a0The goal is to train all active-duty, Guard and Reserve airmen by Dec. 31, and to reduce sexual assault by 50 percent over the next five years. The training sessions can range from 90 minutes to four hours.<br\/><br\/>The Air Force is battling a spike in sexual assault reports, particularly at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">That\u2019s not to say the service would like airmen to stop reporting assaults, but rather, for the number of assaults to decline.<\/span>\u200b<br\/><br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the service academies, the Air Force school consistently has had the highest number of reports since 2011. In the 2014-2015 school year, there were\u00a049 reports, including 27 unrestricted and 22 restricted, almost double the 25 reports in school year 2013-2014.\u00a0A restricted report is a confidential disclosure of the crime\u00a0to specifically identified individuals, like victims&#8217; advocates or health professionals,\u00a0without triggering an official investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">, 3.7 percent<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"550\" height=\"691\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635980625523473025-sexassault-graphicpng.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-35055\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635980625523473025-sexassault-graphicpng.png 550w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635980625523473025-sexassault-graphicpng.png?resize=239,300 239w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span>Military sex assault reports, year-by-year.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span>Photo Credit: Ken Chamberlain\/Staff<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Being aware of the scope of the problem is, of course, important, but not as important as the training experience that airmen\u00a0take back with them into the workplace, said Edwards, who led Tuesday\u2019s session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bEdwards has a team of almost 10 members who travel the country for Green Dot education, which began in 2006.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I don\u2019t stand in front of folks &#8230; saying we\u2019re going to end [sexual assault].&#8221;\u00a0Edwards told the room. &#8220;But I do stand in front of folks saying we can dramatically and significantly and permanently reduce it.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Edwards explained she was a victim of sexual assault at age 19, as was her daughter years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nevertheless, that&#8217;s not what drives her to tour college campuses, high schools and other organizations that\u00a0who can better benefit from the training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;When you stand in the room with your airmen, it\u2019s not just about stopping the next assault from happening,&#8221; Edwards said. &#8220;We step in the room knowing these stories have already impacted so many.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Going beyond SAPR training<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Telling male airmen they potentially fall into the &#8220;rapist&#8221; category, or female airmen that they are potentially the &#8220;victim&#8221; is much too limiting, Edwards said.\u00a0Repeating<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">narrow a confines service members to identify with only two characteristics. Going by<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bthe mantra, &#8220;To be a good person, you must intervene in an ongoing assault,&#8221; isn&#8217;t likely to stem the tide of sexual assault, either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">reverse\u00a0doesn&#8217;t justify a call to action, either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s perhaps why airmen look<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">extremely<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bbored or feel indifferent during SAPR training, Edwards said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Change really happens with a culture shift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There have been a handful of <a href=\"http:\/\/uknow.uky.edu\/content\/green-dot-effective-reducing-sexual-violence\">studies and peer review<\/a> research journals that show Green Dot has engaged in successful ways across campuses and communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Look<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bat the advent of Facebook<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200b and social media, Edwards said. &#8220;Did culture change when [Facebook founder] Mark Zuckerberg put in his email and password and mad<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">k<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200be an account? No. After 30 people did it? No.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But then a handful of people with Facebook accounts turned to hundreds, and thousands,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">then to<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200band millions, then<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200btens of millions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The question remains, when did it happen?&#8221; she said. &#8220;The first account? The 500th? No idea. But I know how it happened. It happened the same way culture changes every single time\u00a0\u2014 when a bunch of individuals each do some small thing.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this case, the culture shift must begin with small numbers of people taking a stand against violence, in whatever ways they can.\u00a0For some people, it may not be easy<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">doesn&#8217;t come easy<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bto step up. He\u2019s shy. She\u2019s scared. Another person may not want to get involved in a friend\u2019s problem at work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It doesn&#8217;t help mean to label an airman as a bad person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200b Edwards calls these barriers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Only when you acknowledge your barriers are we going to come up with some solutions,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Edwards explained that when someone challenges the inner workings of an individual\u2019s thought-process<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">personality<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bor a person\u2019s belief system, &#8220;and you\u2019re not ready for it&#8230;you dig your heels in.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We decide when we\u2019re connected. There is not a policy that can force someone to &#8230; make a choice to intervene &#8230; which means it needs to be intrinsically motivated.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force wants its airmen to have conversations about their internal motivation, or their barriers\u00a0\u2014\u00a0the first step to reduce assaults in the community. All airmen in some way are bystanders to the issue, Edwards said, but instead of handling tough choices passively, there are options, called &#8220;the 3Ds&#8221;: direct, delegate or distract<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">someone from getting hurt<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200b.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More hands-on people could take the direct approach and intervene when they perceive a problem. If airmen are<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">still<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bnot comfortable with that, they could delegate, enlisting the help of a<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">intervening, a<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bfriend or colleague<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">can help, or delegate<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200b. Still another possibility is to distract<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lastly, the airman could create a distraction<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200b, refocusing on another subject entirely<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">an avant garde way<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bto remove someone from a situation where they could potentially make a mistake or get hurt<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">to focus on another subject entirely<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200b.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The idea that the Air Force\u2019s culture on sexual assault can change is not a matter of if, but how.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;As it was pointed out, these things are a culture change, culture doesn&#8217;t change overnight,&#8221; James said. &#8220;On the other hand, if everybody does something, then that\u2019s where the change begins to occur, and that\u2019s really the approach of Green Dot.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Oriana Pawlyk covers deployments, cyber, Guard\/Reserve, uniforms, physical training, crime and operations in the Middle East and Europe for Air Force Times.
