{"id":17036,"date":"2018-10-12T22:46:56","date_gmt":"2018-10-12T22:46:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/10\/12\/some-air-force-navy-f-35s-resume-flying-after-grounding\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T20:27:52","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T20:27:52","slug":"some-air-force-navy-f-35s-resume-flying-after-grounding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/10\/12\/some-air-force-navy-f-35s-resume-flying-after-grounding\/","title":{"rendered":"Some Air Force, Navy F-35s resume flying after grounding"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force and Navy said Friday that some of their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2018\/10\/11\/dod-announces-global-grounding-of-all-f-35s\/\" target=\"_blank\">F-35 Lightning IIs<\/a> are once again flying, a day after the military grounded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/air\/2018\/09\/12\/f-35-operational-testing-delayed-until-latest-software-delivers\/\" target=\"_blank\">the entire fleet<\/a> of its most advanced fighters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pentagon\u2019s move Thursday came just days after a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/09\/28\/an-f-35b-has-crashed-near-marine-corps-air-station-beaufort\/\" target=_blank>U.S. Marine Corps F-35B crashed<\/a> in South Carolina. Investigators feared the crash was caused by a problem with the F-35\u2032s fuel tube, which led to the fleet-wide grounding and inspection of fuel tubes within the engines of all the stealth fighters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Air Force spokeswoman Laura McAndrews said in an email that the majority of the Air Force\u2019s F-35As have been inspected and returned to flying status. Some F-35s \u2014 though the Air Force did not say how many \u2014 still require additional maintenance, however. McAndrews said the Air Force is working with the F-35 Joint Program Office to solve that problem as quickly as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Navy Capt. Max \u201cPepper\u201d McCoy, the commodore of the Navy\u2019s Joint Strike Fighter Wing, said in a statement that the Navy is carrying out a flight schedule with F-35Cs that have completed and passed the inspection. McCoy also said that his wing will continue fleet-wide inspections of its F-35Cs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe continue to balance safety with operational requirements,\u201d McCoy said. \u201cSafety is our primary goal, and we will continue to take every measure to ensure safe operations while we continue to execute our mission.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside Carolina.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps said the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit and all three of its active air wings have resumed normal F-35 flight operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Joint Program Office, in its statement Thursday, said it expected to finish inspections within 24 to 48
