{"id":17217,"date":"2016-07-11T15:53:13","date_gmt":"2016-07-11T15:53:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2016\/07\/11\/air-force-no-plans-to-drop-man-from-job-titles\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T20:27:38","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T20:27:38","slug":"air-force-no-plans-to-drop-man-from-job-titles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2016\/07\/11\/air-force-no-plans-to-drop-man-from-job-titles\/","title":{"rendered":"Air Force: No plans to drop &#8216;man&#8217; from job titles"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\u00a0\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps has decided to drop &#8220;man&#8221; from job titles in a bid to be more gender\u00a0neutral, but the Air Force still isn&#8217;t planning to follow suit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marines in June announced plans to rename 19 military occupational specialties it reviewed to make them gender\u00a0neutral after a review of 33 MOSs ordered by Navy Secretary Ray Mabus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the Corps, jobs such as infantryman and artilleryman will become known as basic infantry Marines and basic field artillery Marines, although traditional names such as rifleman and mortarman will not change. The changes are proving to be\u00a0highly controversial among Marines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In January, the Air Force said it wasn&#8217;t conducting \u2014\u00a0or even considering \u2014\u00a0any review of job titles or rank names. And in a July 6 phone call, Air Force spokeswoman Capt. Brooke Brzozowske said that&#8217;s still the plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;There&#8217;s no change at this time,&#8221; Brzozowske said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div data-alignment=\"center\" data-context=\"internal\" data-img=\"https:\/\/staticviewlift-a.akamaihd.net\/dims4\/default\/1d324b0\/2147483647\/thumbnail\/300x300%3E\/quality\/90\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fsnagfilms-a.akamaihd.net%2Fd6%2F8d%2F0ae8e2334865b4fbee31d64cd833%2F635883690303557561-photo-women-in-combatjpg\" data-object-id=\"00000155-fb69-d683-ad75-ffe96ea80000\" data-object-type=\"articleEmbed\" data-site=\"Air Force Times\" data-text=\"Air Force won't consider dropping 'man' from job titles\" data-type=\"articleEmbed\" data-url=\"null\/articles\/air-force-wont-consider-dropping-man-from-job-titles\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the Air Force&#8217;s January statement, the service emphasized its openness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The Air Force is dedicated to a culture of inclusiveness which enables all airmen to make their greatest contributions to mission success,&#8221; the Air Force said. &#8220;We will continually review all aspects of our program as we proceed with the full integration of women into all Air Force occupational specialties, however, a job title or rank nomenclature review is not currently underway nor being considered at this time.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The decision means the generic title for an Air Force service member\u00a0\u2014 airman\u00a0\u2014 which dates back to the birth of the force will remain unchanged.
