That comprises about 40% of the T-38 fleet and 15% of the T-6 fleet, including planes at each undergraduate pilot training base and Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s unclear when they will return to service. The groundings come after the ejection seat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2022\/07\/27\/navy-and-marine-corps-replacing-faulty-aircraft-ejection-seat-components\/\" target=\"_blank\">manufacturer discovered a potential defect<\/a> with the explosive cartridges that allow a pilot to escape.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2022\/07\/27\/navy-and-marine-corps-replacing-faulty-aircraft-ejection-seat-components\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"158\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Truman.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Navy and Marine Corps replacing faulty aircraft ejection seat components<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">No injuries or deaths have been reported due to the issue, according to the Navy.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nineteenth Air Force boss Maj. Gen. Craig Wills, who runs an organization responsible for the service\u2019s training enterprise, briefly ordered all aircraft in those fleets to stand down on Wednesday while maintainers sought more information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aircraft with ejection seats from the potentially affected production lots will remain grounded until Air Force maintainers can make sure their cartridges are fully functional. The remaining training aircraft are expected to resume flying as usual on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur primary concern is the safety of our airmen and it is imperative that they have confidence in our equipment,\u201d Wills told Air Force Times in an emailed statement. \u201cOur actions \u2026 were taken out of an abundance of caution in order to ensure the safety of our pilots and aircrew.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/08\/24\/gearbox-failures-ejection-seat-setting-mistakes-led-to-fatal-t-38-crash\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/4092366.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Gearbox failures, ejection seat setting mistakes led to fatal T-38 crash<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The crash of a T-38C Talon training aircraft in Texas last November, which killed one of its two pilots, was caused by a dual failure of the trainer\u2019s troubled airframe mounted gearboxes, according to a new Air Force report.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The T-38 is a supersonic jet used to prepare pilots to fly fighter and bomber aircraft, and the T-6 is the service\u2019s turboprop plane used to teach basic flight skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When an airman pulls their ejection handle, the cartridges are supposed to start the process of shooting a pilot out of the cockpit and deploying their parachute. The T-38 and T-6 both use an ejection seat built by Martin-Baker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each aircraft contains multiple explosive cartridges so pilots have backup options if one charge fails, Lockhart said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In total, one-third of the Air Force\u2019s largest training fleets will temporarily be out of commission.
