{"id":17714,"date":"2018-06-05T20:24:34","date_gmt":"2018-06-05T20:24:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/06\/05\/senators-back-even-bigger-boost-for-next-years-va-budget\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:54:08","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:54:08","slug":"senators-back-even-bigger-boost-for-next-years-va-budget","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/veterans\/2018\/06\/05\/senators-back-even-bigger-boost-for-next-years-va-budget\/","title":{"rendered":"Senators back even bigger boost for next year\u2019s VA budget"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 Senate appropriators on Tuesday backed an increase for the Veterans Affairs budget even larger than the boost outlined in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2018\/02\/12\/va-spending-up-again-in-trumps-fiscal-2019-budget-plan\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">President Donald Trump\u2019s request earlier this year<\/a>, a move that would push the department\u2019s funding closer to the $200 billion mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federaltimes.com\/management\/2016\/02\/10\/lawmakers-eye-ever-growing-va-budget\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">proposed $86.4 billion in discretionary spending<\/a> for the department in fiscal 2019, approved by the Senate Appropriations Committee\u2019s veterans panel, is 5.7 percent above VA\u2019s fiscal 2018 budget and about $1.1 billion more than what the White House and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2018\/05\/08\/house-panel-backs-plans-for-another-big-va-funding-boost\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">House lawmakers<\/a> are eyeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sen. John Boozman, R-Ark., and chairman of the subcommittee, said the extra funding isn\u2019t intended to fill any singular oversight. Rather, the money is spread across a host of priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere is so much going on with the system right now, we just felt this was money that would be useful,\u201d he said. \u201cThere is concern (with looming budget caps), but at the end of the day, we\u2019ll be able to find a path forward on that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2018\/05\/08\/house-panel-backs-plans-for-another-big-va-funding-boost\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"187\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP_18043493291754.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">House panel backs plans for another big VA funding boost<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The plan to give VA a $194.5 billion budget next year still must pass the full House and Senate before it becomes reality.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The measure also includes $10.3 billion in military construction funds, in line with administration and House budget plans. Republicans and Democrats on the panel advanced the Senate plan without opposition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The measure calls for $1.8 billion for major and minor construction projects within VA, slightly above the White House request, and $8.6 billion in mental health care services, in line with Trump\u2019s budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Panel ranking member Sen. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, said the proposal also \u201clays down a marker that we will not privatize care for our veterans at the expense of critical in-house medical services\u201d by boosting both VA health accounts and community care funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Combined with mandatory spending, the Senate proposal totals nearly $196 billion. When the war in Afghanistan began in fiscal 2001, the VA budget totaled less than $49 billion. In fiscal 2009, it was $93.7 billion, less than half the current target.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rising costs of VA care have prompted concerns among some lawmakers who lament that increased funding has not always produced better care and benefits for veterans. But outside advocates have argued that cutting back on the annual funding will hurt veterans, not spur reforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The House is set to vote on its version of the fiscal 2019 VA and military construction budget later this week, as part of a package of department appropriations measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Keeping promises made to our <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/veterans?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#veterans<\/a> is a vital responsibility of the federal govt.
