{"id":17863,"date":"2018-05-17T18:10:55","date_gmt":"2018-05-17T18:10:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/05\/17\/commissary-employees-to-get-commissary-shopping-benefits\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:42:28","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:42:28","slug":"commissary-employees-to-get-commissary-shopping-benefits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/management\/pay-benefits\/2018\/05\/17\/commissary-employees-to-get-commissary-shopping-benefits\/","title":{"rendered":"Commissary employees to get shopping benefits"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">RICHMOND, Va. \u2015 Commissary employees will be allowed to shop in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/pay-benefits\/2018\/05\/14\/lawmakers-want-to-pump-the-brakes-on-commissary-exchange-merger-plans\/\" title=\"\" class=\"selected-link\" target=\"_blank\">commissaries<\/a>, probably by the end of June. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe certainly expect the employees to be pleased,\u201d said Michael Dowling, deputy director and chief operating officer of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/pay-benefits\/2018\/05\/01\/coming-soon-beer-and-wine-to-your-local-commissary\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Defense Commissary Agency<\/a>, at a meeting of the American Logistics Association here. He said Robert Bianchi, interim director of the agency, notified employees of the policy change Thursday morning via email.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dowling said one of the most common requests from commissary employees is that they be allowed shopping privileges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"apester-media\" data-media-id=\"5afdc21f9aa241e9726285ad\" height=\"362\"><\/div><script async src=\"\/\/static.apester.com\/js\/sdk\/v2.0\/apester-javascript-sdk.min.js\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said about 50 percent of the commissary agency\u2019s employees will benefit. The other half of the approximately 14,000 employees already have shopping privileges as military spouses, retirees, or other military connections. The benefit has been provided primarily for the military community for more than 150 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The benefit will be extended to employees only; family members will not be allowed to shop. Once the employee leaves or retires, the benefit ends, a source said. Employees will not be allowed to purchase tobacco or other controlled substances, Dowling said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A source said the change was approved by Robert Wilkie, under secretary of defense for personnel and readiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The move may help retention of commissary employees, one source said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside
