At the time, the Air Force faced a budget crunch and an incoming F-35 fleet that required more people and resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Critics of the Air Force also said the service <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2015\/04\/10\/two-star-fired-for-treason-rant-against-a-10-supporters\/\" target=_blank>wanted to scrap the plane<\/a> because it was disinterested in flying close-air support, which former Chief of Staff <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2015\/09\/15\/welsh-the-air-force-cares-about-close-air-support\/\" target=_blank>Gen. Mark Welsh vehemently denied<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But in a sign of how passe the A-10 debate has become, full funding for Warthog upgrades next year \u2014 including re-winging them \u2014 just passed the House Armed Services Committee with nary an objection. The panel approved its proposed version of the fiscal 2020 National Defense Authorization Act in a marathon session that concluded early Thursday morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Arizona Reps. Ruben Gallego and Ann Kirkpatrick applauded the A-10 funding in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe A-10 Warthog has immeasurable value to our U.S. troops on the ground and plays a critical role in our military strategy in the Middle East and around the world,\u201d Gallego said. \u201cI\u2019m glad that we were able to keep this fleet fully operational, and I will continue to fight to preserve this aircraft to ensure that the warfighter on the ground gets their air support.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2015\/03\/23\/chuck-norris-weighs-in-on-a-10-debate\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635627106392459117-ap321902688723jpg.jpg?w=224\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Chuck Norris weighs in on A-10 debate<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">As the Air Force tries to kill the A-10 Warthog, it may have just run up against a force it cannot defeat: Chuck Norris.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gallego and Kirkpatrick noted that the Air Force said in 2017 that nearly half of its A-10 fleet, which consists of 283 aircraft, could be permanently grounded unless funding came through to restart production and re-wing them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe A-10 Warthog has been a vital fixture to Southern Arizona for over 40 years and is instrumental to our military operations around the globe,\u201d Kirkpatrick said. \u201cThe Warthog is a primary mission at Davis-Monthan Air Base [which is in Kirkpatrick\u2019s district], employing hundreds of airmen and it contributes millions of dollars to our local economy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the debate over the plane\u2019s fate raged, the A-10 had a wide array of boosters pushing back on the Air Force\u2019s plans \u2014 everyone from online fans sharing BRRRTTTT memes, to former Arizona representative and now Senator Martha McSally, a former Air Force A-10 pilot, and even Chuck Norris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The controversy got so heated that former Maj. Gen. James Post, who was vice commander of Air Combat Command, told a few hundred airmen in early 2015 that telling Congress the A-10 should be kept in service would be \u201ccommitting treason.&#8221; After an inspector general investigation, Post was reprimanded and removed from his vice commander position.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s a far cry from 2015, when a
