{"id":20387,"date":"2016-03-04T19:16:48","date_gmt":"2016-03-04T19:16:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2016\/03\/04\/the-b-52-could-rise-again-this-time-to-fight-isis\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T20:29:08","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T20:29:08","slug":"the-b-52-could-rise-again-this-time-to-fight-isis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2016\/03\/04\/the-b-52-could-rise-again-this-time-to-fight-isis\/","title":{"rendered":"The B-52 could rise again, this time to fight ISIS"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>This story, originally published on March 4,\u00a0has been updated with\u00a0comments from Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James.\u00a0<\/em><br\/><br\/>The B-52 Stratofortress could\u00a0begin dropping bombs on the Islamic State group come April.<br\/><br\/>The bombers would be\u00a0headed to the Central Command area of operations to replace the B-1 Lancers, the last of them\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2016\/02\/19\/politics\/b-1-bombers-isis\/\">returning\u00a0in January<\/a>.<br\/><br\/>&#8220;While the B-1s will be receiving much needed modernization and maintenance,\u00a0the venerable B-52, with its similar capacity and accuracy and endurance, remains ready and able to meet combatant commander requirements,&#8221; Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James said at an Air Force briefing on March 7.\u00a0<br\/><br\/>&#8220;Now, we&#8217;re waiting for final approval, but there have been recent infrastructure improvements that now allow the necessary support to deploy the B-52 in theater,&#8221; she said.\u00a0<br\/><br\/>Officials were\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.airforcemag.com\/DRArchive\/Pages\/2016\/February%202016\/February%2026%202016\/B-52s-to-the-AOR.aspx\">quoted discussing the aircraft&#8217;s potential deployment\u00a0at an Air Force Association conference last week<\/a>.\u00a0The B-1s should return this summer after they receive additional upgrades.\u00a0<br\/><br\/>Neither the number of B-52s nor number of airmen, under Air Force Global Strike Command, have\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">has\u00a0not yet <\/span>\u200bbeen disclosed yet for the\u00a0operation.\u00a0<br\/><br\/>&#8220;Additional details about all of that, should it happen, will be available at the appropriate time,&#8221; James said.\u00a0<br\/><br\/>The aircraft, which had been used to drop unguided bombs in previous wars, including\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">like <\/span>\u200bAfghanistan, can now be used to provide backup with the accuracy of precision-guided munitions. If scheduled, it would\u00a0be the first deployment for the bombers to fight Islamic State targets, also known as ISIS or ISIL.<br\/><br\/>&#8220;We\u2019re going to keep the B-52 around. It provides some missions for us that are hard to replicate, primarily the range and payload the airplane provides,&#8221; Lt. Gen. James &#8220;Mike&#8221; Holmes, the deputy chief of staff for strategic plans and requirements, told Air Force Times on\u00a0Feb. 18.<br\/><br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service is focusing on a modernization effort to make sure the B-52s stay flying for years to come, potentially as late as 2040, officials have said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How the B-52, nicknamed the &#8220;Big Ugly Fat Fella&#8221; or BUFF,\u00a0will define its\u00a0new legacy against the terror organization in<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">plaguing<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bterritories across Iraq and Syria remains to be seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its payload capacity \u2014 70,000 pounds<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">lbs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200b, \u00a0which\u00a0includes\u00a0&#8220;gravity bombs, cluster bombs, precision guided (cruise) missiles and joint direct attack munitions&#8221; \u2014 \u00a0just skirts the B-1&#8217;s capability. The Lancer, which can fly at 900-plus miles per hour,\u00a0can hold 5,000 pounds<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">lbs<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bmore within the aircraft. Under Operation Inherent Resolve, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.afgsc.af.mil\/News\/ArticleDisplay\/tabid\/2612\/Article\/644383\/28th-bw-welcomes-home-airmen-from-record-setting-deployment.aspx\">B-1s dropped<\/a>3,800 munitions on 3,700 targets in six months, according to the\u00a028th Bomb Wing,\u00a0Ellsworth Air Force Base,\u00a0South Dakota.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Stratofortress, first launched in 1954, deploys regularly\u00a0for exercises stateside, as well as to Europe and the Pacific.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three B-52<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stratofortress<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bbombers and more than 200 airmen <a href=\"http:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/story\/military\/2016\/02\/26\/b-52s-deploy-spain-nato-military-exercise\/81010020\/\">deployed last Friday<\/a>for a military exercise, Cold Response, led by Norway.\u00a0The bombers are assigned to the 2nd Bomb Wing, Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the last two years, the aircraft <a href=\"http:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/story\/military\/2015\/06\/06\/b-52-bombers-deploy-to-europe-for-military-exercises\/28598701\/\">has visited<\/a>the European AOR more than a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/story\/military\/archives\/2014\/10\/21\/b-52s-headed-to-europe-for-second-time-this-year\/78549180\/\">handful of times<\/a>to train in theater security exercises in an\u00a0effort\u00a0\u00a0to reassure allies who are increasingly worried about Russian aggression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A singular B-52 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/story\/military\/pentagon\/2016\/01\/10\/us-b-52-bomber-flies-over-south-korea-standoff-deepens\/78588954\/\">flew over South Korea<\/a>on January 10 after\u00a0North Korea conducted an alleged\u00a0hydrogen bomb test.
