China\u2019s defense ministry said it scrambled jet fighters and took other measures in response to operations by U.S. Air Force B-52 bombers in the vicinity of the South China Sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. Air Force officials said two B-52H Stratofortress bombers departed from Andersen Air Force Base in Guam and participated \u201cin routine training missions\u201d on Aug. 27 and 30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since taking command of U.S. Pacific Air Forces July 26, Gen. Charles Brown has spent half of his time on the road, getting acquainted with the area of responsibility and building relationships with commanders from other U.S. military services in the region, as well as with the officials of partner nations. Brown said he\u2019s already been out to Japan, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/training-sim\/2018\/07\/27\/pitch-black-australia-hosts-multinational-air-power-exercise-with-a-number-of-aircraft-debuts\/\" target=\"_blank\">Australia<\/a>, Alaska and Korea.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/05\/16\/this-decorated-commander-has-just-been-nominated-to-head-pacific-air-forces\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Charles-Brown-AFCENT.JPG.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">This decorated commander has just been nominated to head Pacific Air Forces<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Lt. Gen. Charles Brown Jr., who led the air war against the Islamic State before becoming the deputy commander for U.S. Central Command, has been nominated to receive his fourth star and be the next commander of Pacific Air Forces.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe first priority for me, personally, is to get a better understanding of our area of responsibility across the Indo-Pacific,\u201d Brown told Air Force Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Part of PACAF\u2019s strategy is to \u201crethink how we think about the Pacific,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re not looking to make any major changes, but how do we adjust based on the current environment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2018\/08\/17\/pentagon-china-close-to-nuclear-triad-has-practiced-targeting-us\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"158\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Air-China_web.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">China, close to establishing its own \u2018nuclear triad,\u2019 has practiced targeting US<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The practice runs on Guam are just some of the worrisome changes in China&#039;s behavior, the report found.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s now a greater focus on China and the Pacific, based on the National Defense Strategy, Brown said, especially with China practicing long-range bombing runs that could reach U.S. targets like Guam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because the president has nixed large-scale exercises on the Korean Peninsula for the foreseeable future, routine preparedness training there may be more important than ever, given the unpredictable nature of North Korea\u2019s leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor us, really, it\u2019s how do we make readiness for all types of activities,\u201d he said. \u201cHow we actually train ourselves and train with our partners.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PACAF, he said, must ensure it\u2019s making the best use of its resources to be effective, while also trying to avoid conflict. (Air Force)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One advantage of moving to the Pacific, he said, is that the component commands are all in Hawaii. When he commanded U.S. Air Forces Central, the headquarters of the services were spread out. For that reason, there\u2019s an opportunity to work closely together in Hawaii.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf there\u2019s one key thing I learned out of [working at CENTCOM], it\u2019s that relationships matter,\u201d Brown said. \u201cThe relationships you build at the senior level really do matter to be able to get things done.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several countries in the Pacific region have representatives either at CENTCOM\u2019s headquarters in Tampa, Florida, or at PACAF\u2019s headquarters at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor example, I was just in Korea with a senior national representative from the Tampa headquarters, and we had met before,\u201d he said. \u201cSame with Japan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brown said he has come to realize is the importance of staying in touch with partners, especially understanding where common interests lie and working together to protect those interests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PACAF\u2019s previous commander, Gen. Terrence O\u2019Shaughnessy, offered one piece of advice, he said, and that was to carefully balance the relationships with partners and relationships with the staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat I mean by that is how much you travel,&#8221; Brown said. &#8220;His goal was to be back at our headquarters about 50 percent of the time. Korea, Brown believes the command is the best postured it has been in years to respond to any contingency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It put even more focus on the area from the Air Force in general and led the PACAF staff to be more introspective on how the command does things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m excited to take the opportunity and build
