{"id":21466,"date":"2016-01-13T13:51:41","date_gmt":"2016-01-13T13:51:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2016\/01\/13\/c-130-wing-deploys-for-afghanistan-mission\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T20:38:28","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T20:38:28","slug":"c-130-wing-deploys-for-afghanistan-mission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2016\/01\/13\/c-130-wing-deploys-for-afghanistan-mission\/","title":{"rendered":"C-130 wing deploys for Afghanistan mission"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 150 airmen and four C-130s arrived at Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar, Tuesday in support of Operation Freedom&#8217;s Sentinel, the Defense Department&#8217;s latest name for operations in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Reservists from the 302nd Airlift Wing, Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado, during their four-month deployment outside Doha will provide &#8220;airlift, airdrop and aeromedical evacuation support to operations throughout the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility,&#8221; according to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.302aw.afrc.af.mil\/News\/ArticleDisplay\/tabid\/2343\/Article\/642705\/colorado-reservists-c-130s-to-support-southwest-asia-airlift-operations.aspx\">release from the base<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force <a href=\"http:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/story\/military\/2015\/12\/27\/need-know-2016-fighting-isis-and-afghanistan\/77759128\/\">anticipates a busy 2016<\/a> in the theater, even if President Obama said last year the U.S. will maintain 5,500 troops \u2014 a decrease from the current 9,800 \u2014\u00a0and a small number of bases, including at Bagram and Jalalabad in the east and Kandahar in the south through 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most recently, the KC-135 Stratotanker refueling fleet at Al Udeid <a href=\"http:\/\/www.upi.com\/Business_News\/Security-Industry\/2016\/01\/08\/US-Air-Force-KC-135-tankers-surpass-100000-combat-hours\/3091452284494\/\">completed more than 14,700 sorties<\/a> for operations tied to Freedom&#8217;s Sentinel and Inherent Resolve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;There are different Air Force components like active duty, Reserve and Air National Guard out here,&#8221; \u00a0Lt. Col. James Murray,\u00a0340th Expeditionary Air Refueling Squadron director of operations, said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.af.mil\/News\/ArticleDisplay\/tabid\/223\/Article\/641977\/kc-135s-surpass-100000-combat-hours.aspx\">in a release<\/a>.\u00a0&#8220;Imagine 12 airplanes flying 24 hours a day, it&#8217;s incredible.\u00a0If we were not out there to give gas to all our receivers, they we would have to fly shorter missions.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over 60 KC-135s took part in achieving over 100,000 combat hours, the Air Force said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the 302nd, the scheduled deployment is the fifth for the wing since 2005; members from the wing previously deployed for Operations Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom and New Dawn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a
