Joseph E. Finneran, who was killed during World War II, was accounted for Aug. 9, according to a Friday announcement from the Defense POW\/MIA Accounting Agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the summer of 1943, the 22-year-old from the Jamaica Plain neighborhood of Boston was a bombardier aboard a Consolidated B-24D Liberator assigned to the 345th Bombardment Squadron, 98th Bombardiers Group (Heavy), the \u201cPyramidiers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Aug. 1 of that year, his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2018\/05\/25\/discovery-of-world-war-ii-soldiers-plane-brings-closure\/\" target=_blank>aircraft crashed<\/a> after being hit by enemy anti-aircraft fire during Operation Tidal Wave, the largest bombing mission against the oil fields and refineries at Ploiesti, north of Bucharest, Romania.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2014\/11\/10\/bomber-pilot-now-90-relives-wwii-crash-landing\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/null.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Bomber pilot, now 90, relives WWII crash landing<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">1st Lt. Larry Horn was 21 when he crash-landed his B-24 on an airfield in Yugoslavia.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of the Americans killed, only 27 could be identified and Finneran wasn\u2019t among them, according to the DPAA. The remains that could not be identified <a href=\"\/\/airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/09\/12\/return-of-missing-wwii-airmans-remains-years-in-the-making\/\" target=\"_blank\">were buried as unknowns<\/a> in the Hero Section of the Civilian and Military Cemetery of Bolovan in Ploiesti.
