That rate is about 10 percentage points lower than in 2021, and down by half from a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2019\/07\/10\/tech-sergeant-promotions-hit-17-year-high\/\" target=\"_blank\">peak of 32% in 2019<\/a>. That\u2019s fallen to around 1 in 6 now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Air Force officials are trying to reassure people that even though it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2021\/12\/31\/air-force-enlisted-promotions-will-run-a-bit-differently-in-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\">stopped its previous approach<\/a> of awarding points for an airman\u2019s time in grade and service, a new scoring system will boost their chances of promotion the longer they spend at a certain rank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis promotion cycle was impacted due to enlisted grade restructuring, a leveling-off of end-strength growth and high retention levels,\u201d the Air Force Personnel Center said in a release. \u201cThe 22E6 cycle also implements the Promotion Recommendation Score, which places value on the experience of airmen and sustained superior performance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2021\/12\/15\/air-force-to-test-enlisted-airmen-on-good-judgment-in-2022\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1000w_q95.jpg_13c709.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Air Force to test enlisted airmen on good judgment in 2022<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Senior airmen seeking promotion could see the new section as soon as March.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some are blaming Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force JoAnne Bass, the service\u2019s top enlisted leader, for a decision they say will slow airmen\u2019s career progression, affect their earning potential in and out of the military, and burn out a smaller NCO cadre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe CMSAF is supposed to be our collective voice at the table, but increasingly seems like a hype man\/cheerleader that gives us shout-outs on social media and simply relays messages to us,\u201d wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/AirForce\/comments\/vxa1u1\/the_irony_of_the_highest_enlisted_af_member\/\" target=\"_blank\">one user on Reddit<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUnless they can find a way to solve how overworked we are, how low our morale is and how expensive it can be to live in some locations, the simplest solution is to increase compensation, especially for the hardest-worked career fields,\u201d added another Redditor, speaking of retention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">User shinee07 chimed in: \u201cIt\u2019s going to be funny in about six years when the narrative is \u2018NCOs, we hear you. We understand you\u2019re tired, constantly deploying because some career fields can\u2019t operate without 7-levels [craftsmen]. We\u2019re going to increase promotion rates to balance the force.\u2019 And then everyone here will start complaining about \u2018They\u2019re promoting people too fast!
