{"id":21804,"date":"2020-05-20T22:17:11","date_gmt":"2020-05-20T22:17:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/05\/20\/after-two-crashes-within-days-eglin-announces-safety-pause\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T20:38:13","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T20:38:13","slug":"after-two-crashes-within-days-eglin-announces-safety-pause","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2020\/05\/20\/after-two-crashes-within-days-eglin-announces-safety-pause\/","title":{"rendered":"After two crashes within days, Eglin announces safety pause"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The commander of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2019\/03\/06\/the-f-22-is-back-at-tyndall-air-force-base-well-kind-of\/\" target=\"_blank\">Eglin Air Force Base<\/a> in Florida announced the base will take a \u201csafety pause\u201d on Thursday, after the crash of two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/10\/11\/air-force-f-22-raptor-makes-emergency-landing-in-alaska\/\" target=\"_blank\">fifth-generation fighter jets<\/a> within days of one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2020\/05\/15\/eglin-f-22-crashes-pilot-safely-ejects\/\" target=_blank>F-22 crashed on Eglin\u2019s test and training range<\/a> Friday morning during a training flight. Four days later, on Tuesday night, an F-35 also crashed on the base\u2019s air field. Both pilots safely ejected without significant injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the back-to-back crashes have alarmed the base. Brig. Gen. Scott Cain, commander of the 96th Test Wing, said in a Facebook post Wednesday that while the health of the two pilots is a relief, the base needs to turn its attention to improving safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe events over the past few days remind us that the defense of our country can be a dangerous business,\u201d Cain said. \u201cIt is very important to me that we now take a safety pause.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He ordered commanders at all levels to conduct a \u201cvirtual safety day\u201d Thursday, in reflection of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
