{"id":22465,"date":"2018-03-16T15:25:19","date_gmt":"2018-03-16T15:25:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/03\/16\/army-veteran-who-faces-deportation-denied-us-citizenship\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:59:59","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:59:59","slug":"army-veteran-who-faces-deportation-denied-us-citizenship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/2018\/03\/16\/army-veteran-who-faces-deportation-denied-us-citizenship\/","title":{"rendered":"Army veteran who faces deportation denied US citizenship"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CHICAGO \u2014 An Army veteran with a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2017\/03\/23\/u-s-army-afghanistan-vet-fights-deportation-order-to-return-to-his-native-mexico\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\"> green card who faces deportation<\/a> because of a 2008 drug conviction has been denied U.S. citizenship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The decision Thursday by immigration officials means<a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/veterans\/2018\/02\/08\/illinois-gov-bruce-rauner-denies-clemency-to-vet-facing-deportation\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\"> Miguel Perez Jr. can be deported to Mexico at any time<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 39-year-old Perez petitioned immigration officials to be granted citizenship retroactive to when he joined the military in 2001.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perez served two tours in Afghanistan. He says he mistakenly thought he became a U.S. citizen when he took an oath to protect the nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perez was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers after he served half of a 15-year prison sentence for a nonviolent drug charge. He is being held in a Wisconsin detention center where he awaits deportation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An Army veteran with a green card who faces deportation because of a
