John Rigsbee, a CENTCOM spokesman, said in a statement. \u201cPost-strike reflections indicate that Kabir Aidi was directly connected to the ISIS-K leaders that coordinated the August 26 attack at [Hamid Karzai International Airport].\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That attack killed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/afghanistan\/2021\/08\/27\/after-kabul-attack-evacuations-resume-and-troops-prepare-to-fully-withdraw\/\">13 U.S. service members in the bloodiest single day for Americans since 2011.<\/a> Scores of Afghans were also killed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hours after the airport attack, President Joe Biden, heavily criticized for the deadly chaos in Kabul, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/newsletters\/breaking-news-alert\/2021\/08\/26\/biden-vows-payback-for-deadly-attacks-on-us-troops-but-will-keep-aug-31-afghanistan-withdrawal-plan\/\">vowed payback<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019ve ordered my commanders to develop operational plans to strike ISIS-K assets, leadership and facilities,\u201d Biden said in a White House address at the time. \u201cWe will respond with force and precision at our time, at the place we choose, in a moment of our choosing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The weapon of choice was a drone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cU.S. military forces conducted an over-the-horizon counterterrorism operation today against an ISIS-K planner,\u201d said Navy Capt. Bill Urban, the CENTCOM spokesman, in a statement after the attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe unmanned airstrike occurred in the Nangahar Province of Afghanistan,\u201d Urban said. \u201cInitial indications are that we killed the target. We know of no civilian casualties.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The HKIA attack, wasn\u2019t the first connected to Aidi<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He had been involved in enabling previous attacks in Kabul, Rigsbee said, including the Kabul University attack on Nov. 2, 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe was directly connected to threat streams in Kabul throughout the non-combatant evacuation at the Hamid Karzai International Airport,\u201d said Rigsbee, including \u201cthe reported distribution of explosives and suicide vests.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another U.S. drone strike on Aug. 29 proved to be a deadly mistake, killing 10 Afghan civilians, including seven children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. military officials walked back their initial assessment that ISIS-K members were killed in that attack, later admitting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/breaking-news\/2021\/09\/17\/pentagon-reverses-itself-calls-deadly-kabul-strike-an-error\/\">that they mistakenly targeted an Afghan aid worker<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis strike was taken in the earnest belief that it would prevent an imminent threat to our forces and the evacuees at the airport, but it was a mistake,\u201d Marine Gen. Frank McKenzie, CENTCOM\u2019s commander, told reporters last week, confirming that no ISIS fighters are believed to have been killed in the
