{"id":24267,"date":"2018-06-05T21:20:33","date_gmt":"2018-06-05T21:20:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/06\/05\/air-force-reports-three-emergency-aircraft-landings-in-one-week\/"},"modified":"2026-08-18T20:50:41","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T20:50:41","slug":"air-force-reports-three-emergency-aircraft-landings-in-one-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/06\/05\/air-force-reports-three-emergency-aircraft-landings-in-one-week\/","title":{"rendered":"Air Force reports three emergency aircraft landings in one week"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Air Force has reported three emergency aircraft landings in the past week involving a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2016\/09\/03\/kc-135-celebrates-60-years-in-service\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">KC-135 Stratotanker<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/2017\/03\/10\/air-force-nco-re-enlists-aboard-kc-10-over-syria-while-refueling-her-commanding-officer-s-f-22\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">KC-10 Extender<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2015\/04\/22\/air-force-looking-at-using-ospreys-for-search-and-rescue\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">CV-22 Osprey<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The latest incident, involving the CV-22, occurred at 11 p.m. on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aircraft, assigned to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/05\/01\/special-operations-wing-gives-commanders-leeway-to-target-queep\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">1st Special Operations Wing <\/a>out of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/01\/08\/more-time-at-home-air-force-seeks-to-ease-relentless-deployments-for-in-demand-airmen\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Hurlburt Field, Florida<\/a>, made a precautionary landing in a field near Ashland, Alabama, \u201cout of an abundance of caution,\u201d according to the wing\u2019s press statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The CV-22 \u2014 a multi-mission, tilt-rotor aircraft with vertical takeoff and landing capabilities \u2014 was performing a routine training mission at the time. None of the five crew members on-board were injured. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We appreciate all the help and support we are receiving from the community and emergency services here in Ashland,\u201d Lt. Col. Olsen)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aircraft is assigned to the 305th Air Mobility Wing at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2015\/11\/18\/mandatory-blues-return-to-mcguire-dix-lakehurst\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" style=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst<\/a>, New Jersey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The KC-10 had finished conducting a fighter refueling mission over the Atlantic Ocean and was returning to its home station when the pilot declared an in-flight emergency for a fire indication light in the cockpit, Maj. Brian Wagner, a Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst public affairs official, told Air Force Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aircraft was diverted to Shannon, \u201cwhere it landed safely\u201d and \u201cwithout incident,\u201d Wagner said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe aircraft will return to the United States once the required repairs are made,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wagner said there were no injuries to the crew or damage to the aircraft. Although the in-flight emergency was caused by a fire indication light in the cockpit, it remains unknown if there was an actual fire. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wagner characterized the KC-10\u2019s diversion as a routine, precautionary measure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breakingnews.ie\/ireland\/us-military-air-to-air-refuelling-jet-makes-emergency-landing-at-shannon-846716.html\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Irish news outlets<\/a> reported that local fire and rescue services were mobilized to the incident and met the aircraft at the runway. Emergency vehicles surrounded the plane after it came to a stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The KC-135 was based out of Wisconsin\u2019s General Mitchell Air National Guard Base.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe 128 [Air Refueling Wing] Maintenance Group sent out a tow team to tow the aircraft off the runway so that normal operations at [Mitchell International Airport] could resume,\u201d a statement from the KC-135\u2019s unit reads. \u201cThe runway was closed so that the Crash Fire Rescue team could perform response tasks. An investigation into the cause of the emergency will be initiated.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The three incidents are all being investigated.
