{"id":24407,"date":"2018-10-25T21:01:09","date_gmt":"2018-10-25T21:01:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/10\/25\/pence-tyndall-training-operations-will-soon-resume-as-recovery-continues\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T20:40:35","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T20:40:35","slug":"pence-tyndall-training-operations-will-soon-resume-as-recovery-continues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/10\/25\/pence-tyndall-training-operations-will-soon-resume-as-recovery-continues\/","title":{"rendered":"Pence: Tyndall training operations will soon resume as recovery continues"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vice President Mike Pence on Thursday announced that Tyndall Air Force Base will soon resume some parts of its F-22 training mission, as the installation continues to recover from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/10\/11\/tyndall-sustains-direct-hit-extensive-damage-from-hurricane\/\" target=_blank>Hurricane Michael\u2019s devastation<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During a visit to Tyndall, along with his wife Karen, Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson and Florida Governor Rick Scott, Pence repeatedly pledged that \u201cWe will rebuild Tyndall Air Force Base,\u201d most of which was heavily damaged by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/10\/12\/f-22s-qf-16-likely-damaged-after-tyndall-hangars-hit-by-hurricane\/\" target=_blank>Category 4 storm<\/a>. Pence also said the briefing on Tyndall\u2019s status he and Wilson received was \u201cgreatly encouraging,\u201d and spelled out some early plans to get parts of Tyndall\u2019s mission back up and running.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTo see the progress that\u2019s been made in just two weeks and a day is a great tribute to the people of the Panhandle,\u201d Pence said. \u201cIt is a great tribute to the men and women who serve here at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/10\/15\/air-force-hurricane-damage-to-tyndall-f-22s-less-than-we-feared-but-unknown-how-many-will-fly-again\/\" target=_blank>Tyndall Air Force Base<\/a> in particular. As President Trump said when he was in the region not long ago, \u2018We\u2019re with you.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wilson said that Tyndall\u2019s air operations center, which is responsible for managing the air defense of the United States and has more than 800 people working there, will be back up and running by Jan. 1. Another air operations center is handling that responsibility now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The simulators in Tyndall\u2019s F-22 training schoolhouse were not badly damaged, Wilson said, and likely will be operational again soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The F-22s and T-38s used to train pilots there still can\u2019t fly out of Tyndall, she said, but they\u2019ll be temporarily staged at Eglin so training flights can resume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBy Thanksgiving, we will have F-22s in the skies over the Panhandle,\u201d Wilson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/10\/17\/as-tyndall-begins-recovery-a-hard-road-and-hard-questions-lie-ahead\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Tyndall-aerial-porter.JPG.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">As Tyndall begins recovery, a hard road \u2014 and hard questions \u2014 lie ahead<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">As Tyndall Air Force Base begins recovering from the devastation of Hurricane Michael, it faces some hard questions about what the future will hold for the airmen, civilians and their families who were forced to evacuate.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wilson said the Air Force has so far committed $100 million to recovery efforts at the base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scott said that Tyndall is a major economic engine in that portion of the state, which affects about 20,000 jobs and brings $2.5 billion a year to the local economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAll of us in Florida know the importance of Tyndall,\u201d Scott said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The governor also said Florida will reopen its local schools as soon as possible so Tyndall\u2019s civilian personnel can get back to a normal life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pence praised Tyndall commander Col. Brian Laidlaw and the 325th Fighter Wing, and passed along Trump\u2019s congratulations, for the way they responded to Michael.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat Col. Laidlaw and his team did here, with very little notice, as Hurricane Michael approached, was in the highest tradition of the United States Air Force,\u201d Pence said. \u201cTo be able to move that many personnel, that many resources, that quickly, it\u2019s what the Air Force knows how to do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Laidlaw said that many of the personnel and families evacuated from Tyndall are at nearby Eglin and Hurlburt Field, so the Air Force has set up a welcome center there to offer legal, moving. personnel and school
