AFCENT said the planes used&nbsp;\u201dwell-planned, precision aistrikes to &#8230; minimiz[e] damage to the historic structure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And as ground forces accelerated their drive to take back Raqqa between July 7 and 13, AFCENT said the coalition released 1,200 weapons that week \u2014 the highest weekly amount of the war so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the end of the month, AFCENT said the Syrian Democratic Forces controlled about 45 percent of Raqqa.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2017\/06\/14\/the-bombing-campaign-against-isis-is-growing\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"134\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/raptors-iraq-april-2017.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">The bombing campaign against ISIS is growing<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The U.S.-led coalition waging the air war against the Islamic State released 4,374 weapons in Iraq and Syria in May \u2014 by far the most of any month since the war began.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coalition airstrikes also killed Abu Sulayman al-Iraqi and Bassam al-Jayfus last month, who AFCENT described as senior ISIS propagandists and facilitators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pace of airstrikes has accelerated considerably throughout 2017, with 27,726 weapons released during the first seven months of the year. At this pace, by the end of August the number of weapons released will easily surpass the 28,696 bombs dropped in all of 2015 and the 30,743 weapons released throughout 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coalition aircraft also released 350 weapons in Afghanistan in July, which was the third-highest tally so far this year. That included a July 11 MQ-9 Reaper strike that killed Abu Sayed, the emir of ISIS affiliate ISIS-Khorasan, in Kunar Province, at the terrorist group\u2019s headquarters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSayed is the third ISIS-K emir killed in the last year by a precision airstrike, sending a clear signal that there is no safe haven for ISIS-K in Afghanistan,\u201d AFCENT said.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<script id=\"infogram_0_52b36b31-47cb-41e6-80e0-8cdef10cd506\" title=\"Copy: Weapons released\" src=\"\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed.js?L62\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The statistics do not account for all aircraft flying in the area, or weapons released. AFCENT\u2019s statistics only include weapons released by aircraft under Combined Forces Air Component Commander, or CFACC, control, which includes aircraft from all U.S. military branches and coalition aircraft, but not all aircraft there fall under CFACC control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The statistics also do not include strikes conducted by attack helicopters and
