Joseph, who died May 26, and Hall, who died June 1, both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2016\/07\/01\/heart-failure-killed-basic-trainee-after-run-report-says\/\" target=\"_blank\">experienced medical emergencies<\/a> during their official physical fitness assessments on Shaw\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2016\/12\/21\/air-force-finds-17-bases-have-too-long-pt-tracks-promises-remedy-for-wrongful-failures\/\" target=\"_blank\">running tracks<\/a>, and died a few days later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two days after Hall\u2019s death, Col. Derek O\u2019Malley, commander of Shaw\u2019s 20th Fighter Wing, suspended all PT testing at the base until further notice, and launched an investigation into what caused their deaths.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2019\/06\/03\/shaw-suspends-pt-testing-after-two-airmens-running-related-deaths\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Shaw-running-assessment.JPG.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Shaw suspends PT testing after two airmen\u2019s running-related deaths<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Shaw wants to find out if anything related to the PT assessment process or the environment contributed to the recent deaths of two senior airmen from the same squadron after their running assessments.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Capt. Alannah Staver, chief of public affairs for the 20th, said June 3 that the base wanted to find out if anything related to PT processes, or environmental factors related to the quarter-mile track or the 0.75-mile out-and-back track, caused the medical complications that killed Joseph and Hall. A memorial service was held for Joseph at the base June 7, in which she was described as a \u201cselfless mentor, caring, patient and loving to those around her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cJoseph was always smiling,\u201d Staff Sgt. Brandon Hayes said in a June 13 release about her memorial service. \u201cEvery single time I would walk past her, she would stop what she was doing to strike up a conversation. She brightened up the room with her presence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joseph was posthumously awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal for her achievements. She is survived by her husband, Brenthum, and two sons Deneilson and Renaldo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hall\u2019s life was remembered in a June 5 memorial service.
