That investigation was prompted by a B-1\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/05\/02\/air-force-b-1b-lancer-makes-emergency-landing-at-texas-airport\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">emergency landing<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/05\/18\/air-force-b-1-lancer-blew-escape-hatch-in-emergency-landing-but-its-seat-did-not-eject\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Midland International Air and Space Port<\/a> in Texas on May 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The stand-down gave Global Strike Command time to thoroughly evaluate egress components and determine potential risks before returning to flight, according to a Tuesday press release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have high confidence that the fleet\u2019s egress systems are capable and the fleet is ready to return to normal flight operations,\u201d said Maj. Gen. Thomas Bussiere, 8th Air Force Commander, which is responsible for the Air Force bomber fleet. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/06\/08\/after-stand-down-air-force-begins-scouring-data-for-a-solution-to-aircraft-mishaps\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AIR-pilot-training-web.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">After stand-down, Air Force begins scouring data for a solution to aircraft mishaps<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Air Force has finished the first wave of one-day safety stand-downs of flying and maintenance wings ordered in the wake of a string of alarming aircraft mishaps and crashes.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although flights operations are restarting, the investigation is still ongoing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The investigation into the bomber fleets\u2019 egress system was sparked after photos from the May 1 emergency landing showed that the bomber, based out of Dyess Air Force Base, Texas, blew at least one of its four cockpit escape hatches, but the ejection seat did not deploy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All four crew members landed safely during the incident. However, the Air Force began to question whether the ejection seat had failed altogether. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Safety Investigation Board from the May 1 in-flight emergency is still ongoing and we can\u2019t get into the specifics of the investigation because it is privileged information,\u201d Global Strike Command spokeswoman Linda Frost said in an email to Air Force Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe [board\u2019s] purpose is to prevent future mishaps or losses and is comprised of experts who investigate the incident and recommend corrective actions,\u201d Frost added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The command\u2019s safety stand-down came at a time when the Air Force has been facing greater scrutiny for a series of troubling aircraft mishaps and crashes, some of which have been fatal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last month, Chief of Staff Gen. Dave Goldfein ordered a one-day safety stand-down for all flying and maintenance wings in order to collect more data and determine the source of the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The B-1B Lancer is a long-range, supersonic conventional bomber. They have been flown by the U.S. Air Force since 1985, according to Boeing, which produces the aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe aircraft is on track to continue flying, at current demanding operations tempo, out to 2040 and beyond, and Boeing partners with the Air Force to keep the B-1 mission ready,\u201d <a
