Charles \u201cCQ\u201d Brown is a decorated pilot and the first Black man to serve as the top uniformed officer of one of the U.S. armed services. Actor Anthony Mackie plays Sam Wilson, an airman-turned-superhero who recently assumed the mantle of Captain America in the Marvel universe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mackie was bestowed with the title \u201cCap\u201d in the limited television series \u201cThe Falcon and the Winter Soldier\u201d after previous title-holder Chris Evans bowed out of the franchise at the conclusion of \u201cAvengers: Endgame.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The changing of the fictional guard has coincided with a very real reckoning on race in America, starting with the handoff of Cap\u2019s iconic shield in 2019 \u2014 before George Floyd\u2019s May 2020 death in the custody of a white Minneapolis police officer spurred protests over police brutality and systemic racism \u2014 to Wilson\u2019s acceptance of the title in 2021, nearly a year after those events riled international communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2020\/06\/05\/stop-everything-and-watch-the-likely-next-air-force-chief-of-staffs-powerful-statement-on-race\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/CQ-Brown-race-video.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Stop everything, and watch the likely next Air Force chief of staff\u2019s powerful statement on race<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">\u201cI\u2019m thinking about how full I am with emotion, not just for George Floyd, but the many African Americans that have suffered the same fate as George Floyd,&quot; Gen. CQ Brown began in his heartfelt video.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2020\/06\/09\/senate-confirms-new-air-force-chief-of-staff-in-historic-unanimous-vote\/\" target=\"_blank\">Brown, who was confirmed<\/a> as Air Force chief of staff at the height of those tensions in June 2020, compared Wilson\u2019s reluctant airman-Falcon-Captain America journey to his own rise through the ranks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The four-star didn\u2019t join the Air Force expecting to one day lead it, nor did he aspire to the position just a few years ago. But when the opportunity presented itself, he took it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think the series actually did a good job of capturing the aspect of being offered an opportunity, and in some cases, not feeling that you\u2019re fully qualified, but want to ensure that, if you do take on the responsibility, that you are able to represent because a lot of folks are watching,\u201d Brown said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was meaningful to watch the evolution of \u201csomeone with \u2026 humble beginnings to come to where he is and have the opportunity and the realization that \u2018I can do this,\u2019\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brown said he empathizes with pursuing an opportunity while leaning of the support of others, as well as the notion that his white counterparts \u2014 like Bucky Barnes, Wilson\u2019s odd-couple teammate portrayed by Sebastian Stan \u2014 might not understand the extra burden of being a \u201cfirst\u201d in a role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A particular fact-meets-fiction piece of the show, meanwhile, proved emotional for Mackie: the storyline of Isaiah Bradley, an elderly Black Army veteran who served as a secret guinea pig for the super-soldier serum that, once perfected, transformed a scrawny Steve Rogers into the celebrated Captain America. The Air Force chief is a massive fan.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mackie moved to New York in 1997, landing in Harlem among neighborhoods called home by Black veterans of Vietnam and World War II. Reading the scenes about Bradley, played by Carl Lumbly, evoked feelings about those service members, he said, and echoed other events in American history, such as the medical exploitation of the Tuskegee syphilis experiment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere is a group of soldiers, in our history and our legacy as a country, who have been neglected and denied,\u201d Mackie said. \u201cIt was more than just about Sam or Captain America. It was truly something that we did for all those soldiers who haven\u2019t been recognized, who haven\u2019t had a movie made about them, who weren\u2019t rewarded when they came back from war, fighting for this country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sam Wilson isn\u2019t only \u201cBlack Cap,\u201d Mackie added, but \u201cCaptain America for all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A noted Spider-Man enthusiast, Brown\u2019s own experience in a cockpit reads like a superhero origin story: In 1991, his F-16 Fighting Falcon caught fire when its fuel tank exploded from what is believed to be a lightning strike. Brown safely ejected with the jet traveling more than 300 mph, moments before the plane crashed into the Florida Everglades, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national-security\/the-new-air-force-chief-wasnt-sure-how-to-address-george-floyds-killing-then-he-talked-to-his-son\/2020\/08\/19\/f7c63e24-de3c-11ea-b4af-72895e22941d_story.html\" target=\"_blank\">according to the Washington Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of being imbued with superhuman flight (<a href=\"https:\/\/taskandpurpose.com\/mandatory-fun\/air-force-charles-brown-bbq-brisket-recipe\/\" target=\"_blank\">or barbecue skills<\/a>), Brown said his superpower is breaking down complex problems and trying to \u201cmake [the military] better than when I got into this position.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2019\/01\/09\/captain-marvel-takes-flight-new-footage-shows-film-star-in-nellis-f-16\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"155\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/CMS9040_cmp_v010_004633.1024.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Captain Marvel takes flight: New footage shows film star in Nellis F-16<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The time visiting with Air Force pilots also apparently helped Larson understand where her character \u2014 whose real name is Carol Danvers \u2014 is coming from.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI really believe &#8230; young people only aspire to be what they\u2019ve been exposed to,\u201d he added. \u201cThat\u2019s an important aspect of being able to be a role model and opening doors for those that come behind us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force has endorsed that message <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2021\/03\/19\/heres-the-air-forces-plan-to-diversify-its-pilot-corps\/#:~:text=Now%2C%20the%20Air%20Force%20is,social%20media%20and%20marketing%20campaigns.\" target=\"_blank\">via policy<\/a> as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2019\/03\/08\/in-captain-marvel-air-force-leaders-see-tribute-to-the-spirit-of-female-airmen\/\" target=\"_blank\">through Hollywood<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Acknowledging Brown\u2019s almost-40-year career, Mackie made sure to joke about his own service \u2014 three days in the Reserve Officer Training Corps. The New Orleans native joked that he joined ROTC because he envied the students who carried flags in Mardi Gras parades. He soon discovered there was more to military life than dancing down Canal Street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou guys\u2019 march is very controlled, very regimented. When we march, we\u2019re out there twerking and doing flips and we\u2019re spinning the flags and all this, because it\u2019s Mardi Gras,\u201d Mackie said. \u201cSo I was in ROTC for like three days, and I got asked to leave because I wasn\u2019t doing well. All I wanted to do was carry the flag, man, just let me carry the flag.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of publication, there\u2019s still no word on whether Brown has been allowed to wear Mackie\u2019s robotic \u201cFalcon\u201d wings.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gen.
