Taylor Bye when her attack aircraft began falling apart in midair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Juggling a malfunctioning 30mm Gatling gun, a landing gear that wouldn\u2019t deploy and a cockpit canopy that fell off in flight, Bye managed to safely land the aircraft with minimal damage to the runway or the plane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her courage and cool in crisis earned her the Air Combat Command\u2019s Airmanship Award in a May 5 ceremony at Moody Air Force Base, Georgia, where she serves as a 75th Fighter Squadron pilot and its chief of standardization and evaluation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The emergency occurred April 7, 2020, while Bye was flying at the Grand Bay Bombing and Gunnery Range east of Moody. Brett DeVries had no choice but to try to land the plane on its belly without landing gear or a canopy.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She climbed farther away from the ground to check whether her engines were still functioning. Her nearby wingman, Maj. Jack Ingber, the squadron\u2019s assistant operations director, looked over her jet from his own plane and helped guide Bye back to the runway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen anything [unusual] happens, it\u2019s apparent and very easy to spot it and fix it,\u201d Ingber said in the release. \u201cIt\u2019s my primary job to think of everything that [Bye] is not because she has a massive handful of an airplane that is falling apart.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On her canopy-less descent back to Moody, Bye tried to shift down in her seat to shield herself from the 350-mph winds whipping the plane \u2014 but blocked her view of the runway in the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI thought, \u2018where\u2019s the ground, where\u2019s the ground\u2019 \u2026 I was holding my breath at that point,\u201d she said in the release. \u201cI guess I was nervous the whole time, but I didn\u2019t have time to think about being nervous. My job was to take care of myself and to take care of the jet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A chase aircraft accompanied her back to base, where airmen on the ground hoped she could avoid a fatal crash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat\u2019s most important is preventing total loss of the A-10 or even worse, her life,\u201d squadron commander Lt. Col. Stephen Joca said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bye maintained control of the aircraft and safely landed the Warthog on its belly.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2019\/08\/13\/a-10-re-winging-completed-will-keep-warthog-in-the-air-until-late-2030s\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/A-10-rewinging-test-flight.JPG.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">A-10 re-winging completed, will keep Warthog in the air until late 2030s<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The new wings have an improved wire harness design, meant to make them easier to remove.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force has tried to retire the 1970s-era attack planes but was rebuffed by Congress. It will instead rely on further refurbishment to fly Warthogs for about another two decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s not the first time an A-10 pilot has encountered such a harrowing experience. In 2017, Michigan Air National Guard Maj. Brett DeVries landed a Warthog sans canopy or functioning landing gear at the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center after his gun misfired during a strafing run. He earned the Distinguished Flying Cross, the military\u2019s highest award for aerial achievements,  fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force logged five A-10 mishaps in fiscal 2020, according to Air Force Safety Center data. In addition to Bye\u2019s experience, a similar accident occurred in Nevada in July 2020 when an A-10\u2032s engine stalled and its gun overheated, causing significant damage but no injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The other incidents involved engine issues: A Warthog suffered an engine fire during flight but safely returned to base in Afghanistan in January 2020. Another mishap in Arizona in March 2020 saw the A-10\u2032s engine compressor stall out; the engine was damaged and the pilot returned to base without injury. A second event in Arizona in April 2020 involved an engine that caught fire and shut down in flight, but the pilot was not hurt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis doesn\u2019t happen very often in the history of the A-10,\u201d Joca said of Bye\u2019s incident. \u201cThere are some steps that were covered in the [safety] checklist \u2014 the rest was just superb airmanship and decision-making.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Air Force Capt.
