However, U.S. military bases have already begun research into areas like space-based intelligence, space surveillance and defensive space control.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/congress\/2019\/06\/10\/house-panel-to-debate-counter-offer-to-trumps-space-force\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP_19050710473736.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">House panel to debate counteroffer to Trump\u2019s Space Force<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The House Armed Services Committee will debate a new military branch for space as part of the 2020 defense policy bill.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new facility will include office and lab space for 65 civilian and military contractors. It will contain a 5,000 square-foot (1,524 square-meter) laboratory space and more than 5,000 square feet (1,524 square meters) of secure office, laboratory and meeting space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new laboratory will study space warfighting technology, and house specialized labs and equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Space is now a war-fighting domain,&#8221; said Air Force Col. Eric Felt, director of the Space Vehicles Directorate at the base. The Space Vehicles Directorate helps the Air Force with space technology research. It also develops technologies to use in space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;If our adversaries attempt to counter us in that domain, we need to have the capabilities and the tools for our nation to counter that,&#8221; Felt said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At a groundbreaking ceremony at the base on Thursday, Felt said the new facility will help in that effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brian Engberg, the chief of the space control technologies branch of Air Force Research Laboratory&#8217;s Spacecraft Components Division said researchers would address threats from other countries and from space like asteroids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Every satellite that we have up there needs to be resilient,&#8221; Felt said. &#8220;It needs to be there when we need it. If we happen to be in a conflict with a peer competitor, our satellites have to have the defense capabilities when we need them the most.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
