{"id":26019,"date":"2016-04-08T14:26:35","date_gmt":"2016-04-08T14:26:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2016\/04\/08\/two-dead-in-shooting-at-lackland-air-force-base-in-san-antonio\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T20:40:46","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T20:40:46","slug":"two-dead-in-shooting-at-lackland-air-force-base-in-san-antonio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2016\/04\/08\/two-dead-in-shooting-at-lackland-air-force-base-in-san-antonio\/","title":{"rendered":"Two dead in shooting at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The morning calm at\u00a0Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland was shattered Friday when an apparent murder-suicide\u00a0at a classroom building\u00a0left two men dead,\u00a0triggered\u00a0a lockdown and brought a swarm of military, federal\u00a0and local law enforcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, a shaken military community\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">Lackland <\/span>is trying to piece together what may have prompted the violence<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">\u00a0led one man to shoot another man, before turning the his Glock pistol on himself<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This morning, we received one of those calls that you never want to receive,&#8221; Brig. Gen. Bob LaBrutta, <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">the <\/span>commander of the 502nd Air Base Wing and Joint Base San Antonio, said in a news conference <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">at the base <\/span>after the lockdown had been lifted. &#8220;Our hearts and prayers go out to the families that are going to be affected by this tragedy. The care of those families is really foremost in our minds right now.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Details about the incident were slow to emerge Friday. LaBrutta said that, pending notification of the victims&#8217; families,\u00a0the Air Force would not release any information about them, <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">on the deceased pending notification of their next of kin, <\/span>their relationship,\u00a0or speculate about the shooting&#8217;s possible motive<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> in the shooting<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However,\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">An initial internal Pentagon communication obtained by <\/span>Air Force Times obtained an internal Pentagon memo indicating\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">said <\/span>the commanding officer of a training squadron at the base was shot by another airman. That communication, distributed among senior military officials\u00a0as law enforcement officials swarmed the base&#8217;s Medina Annex,\u00a0apparently listed an incorrect squadron. The mistake was pointed out by an\u00a0Air Force spokeswoman at the Pentagon, who said she was not authorized to\u00a0offer further clarity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Associated Press also reported Friday <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">afternoon <\/span>that an unnamed senior U.S. official confirmed <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">said <\/span>an airman shot his commander.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The shooting took place at Building 147 of the Medina Annex, in a classroom facility known as Forbes Hall, said Lt. Col. Bobby Ford, who leads the base&#8217;s <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">802nd <\/span>security forces squadron<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> commander at Lackland, said at the news conference<\/span>. The first 911 call <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">reporting the active shooting <\/span>was made <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">to 911 <\/span>at 8:40 a.m. Central Standard Time, he added<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> Ford said<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe allowfullscreen=\"true\" class=\"googlemaps\" frameborder=\"0\" id=\"googlemaps\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/embed?mid=zTrGH0w0xSXc.kyjKX7a3HMRM\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>Ford said two patrols responded to the scene within three minutes <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">of the call being placed <\/span>and entered the building to begin searching. The base was <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">also <\/span>immediately placed on lockdown, he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within eight minutes, Ford said, <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">that <\/span>officers found the two men dead in an office on the first floor. LaBrutta said two Glock pistols were found at the scene.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the next hour, first responders continued to sweep the building <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">to <\/span>searching for other potential shooters or victims<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> until 9:59 a.m<\/span>. At 10 a.m., the building was declared safe and law enforcement began investigating the crime scene, Ford said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lockdown was lifted at 10:17 a.m., Ford said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bexar County Sheriff&#8217;s Office spokesman James Keith told reporters that\u00a0&#8220;Right now it does appear to be a murder-suicide situation.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lt. Col. Jeremy Waller, commander of the Office of Special Investigations&#8217;\u00a011th Field Investigations Squadron at Joint Base San Antonio, said OSI agents are conducting the crime scene investigation and looking into how the shooting began. Waller said the investigation would continue for several hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The FBI said its agents were offering assistance to support the investigation. Terrorism is not suspected, officials said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Friday&#8217;s <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">But the <\/span>shooting marks the latest in a series of violent attacks inside the nation&#8217;s\u00a0military facilities. The trend has caused anxiety among\u00a0service members and their families, while sparking debate over how the military can ensure their safety<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> and\u00a0comes as at a time of high tensions and concerns about troops&#8217; vulnerability to mass shootings in the United States<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last summer, after\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">In June 2013, an Army captain was shot and wounded by her estranged husband at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston. In 2015, <\/span>four Marines and a Navy sailor were killed by a terrorist in Chattanooga, Tennessee, there were calls in Congress and beyond to allow military personnel to carry firearms while on duty. That debate has intensified as\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">And in 2009, 13 people were killed and more than 30 were wounded in a mass shooting at Fort Hood in Texas.\u00a0And as the United States has ramped up its war against <\/span>the Islamic State militant group <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">in the Middle East, ISIS sympathizers have <\/span>issues threats against U.S. troops and their families, encouraging sympathizers to attack\u00a0them in the open<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> on social media, further raising fears<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Lackland\u00a0shooting also took place on the same day several hundred new airmen graduated from had their\u00a0basic military training at the base graduation ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LaBrutta said only authorized law enforcement such as security forces and Office of Special Investigations agents are allowed to carry weapons on base. He said the investigation into Friday&#8217;s shooting\u00a0will look at how the weapons were brought into the facility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The incident <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">shooting\u00a0also\u00a0<\/span>took place on the same day that several hundred new airmen and their families gathered at the base to mark their graduation\u00a0from\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">had their\u00a0<\/span>basic military training<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> at the base\u00a0graduation ceremony<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/staff\/40477\/phillip-swarts\/\">Phillip Swarts<\/a> of Air Force Times and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/staff\/30651\/david-larter\/\">David Larter<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/\">Navy Times<\/a>\u00a0contributed to this report.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two people are dead in an apparent murder-suicide at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in Texas, the Bexar County Sheriff&#8217;s Office said Friday morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shortly before noon Eastern Standard Time, the sheriff&#8217;s office said the situation is contained and that the shooter is no longer active. The base issued a release saying there are no indications the shooting was a terrorist attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a news conference at the base, Brig. Gen. Bob LaBrutta, the commander of the 502nd Air Base Wing and Joint Base San Antonio, said two men were found dead in an office on the first floor of building 147 of the Medina Annex, a classroom facility known as Forbes Hall.
