Carlton Everhart told reporters on Tuesday at the Air Force Association\u2019s annual conference that 14 of the aircraft are in the overhaul process, with maintainers working on an expedited timeline to deem them compliant.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everhart ordered a fleet-wide maintenance assessment this summer&nbsp;after nose landing gear malfunctioned on two C-5s based out of Dover Air Force Base in Delaware.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/digital-show-dailies\/afa-air-space\/2015\/09\/13\/air-force-association\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635778244875016557-15-332-dfn-afa-promo-608-airjpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Air Force Association<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Defense News coverage of the Air Force Association show<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since then, maintainers have worked fast to inspect and maintain most of the aircraft, speeding up what normally takes 12-16 hours per plane, Everhart said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The nose landing gear malfunctioned internally, Everhart said, which is why external inspections didn\u2019t prompt concern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf it fails internally, how do you know it fails? Well, the airplane doesn\u2019t land right,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everhart showed reporters a proper landing gear bearing compared with one that malfunctioned.
