{"id":26234,"date":"2022-05-18T23:00:16","date_gmt":"2022-05-18T23:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2022\/05\/18\/air-force-may-allow-another-dash-of-stache\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T20:46:12","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T20:46:12","slug":"air-force-may-allow-another-dash-of-stache","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2022\/05\/18\/air-force-may-allow-another-dash-of-stache\/","title":{"rendered":"Air Force may allow another dash of \u2019stache"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force isn\u2019t budging on men\u2019s pleas to let them sport beards, but airmen could soon be allowed to grow slightly wider mustaches instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than force airmen to trim their upper lip to match the width of their mouths, the service may soon allow mustaches to extend a quarter-inch past each corner of their lips, for an extra half-inch of hair in total.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pictures of paperwork posted to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/AFamnncosnco\/posts\/pfbid0SCBMXQC1HargdTbJjkzsWwm4j6n44KKyiWaWTh4TTfnqVvP9MLLKnmDUhULsaYZ4l\" target=\"_blank\">Air Force amn\/nco\/snco<\/a> Facebook page Wednesday say the policy change is slated to be handed down Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Department of the Air Force is in the process of finalizing updates to grooming and uniform policies. All information posted online is pre-decisional and is subject to change,\u201d Tech. Sgt. Deana Heitzman, an Air Force spokesperson, said when asked to verify the post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A memo from assistant deputy personnel chief Gwendolyn DeFilippi to the force instructs that a mustache should not grow past an airman\u2019s upper lip line, as the policy already states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe mustache will not go beyond a horizontal line extending across the corners of the mouth and no more than 1\/4 inch beyond a vertical line drawn from the corner of the mouth,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If enacted, it would replace mustache regulations that say the hair must be \u201cmoderate,\u201d \u201cwithin reasonable limits\u201d and \u201cnot excessive or extreme\u201d and remain within the confines of an airman\u2019s upper lip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some commenters online noted that the service isn\u2019t always strict about enforcing the rules governing facial hair magnitude. Officials argue the new rules improve airmen\u2019s health and allow for some individualism without jeopardizing military missions or culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beards are still off-limits \u2014 except for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2022\/05\/16\/racist-text-spurs-air-force-investigation-into-alleged-squadron-job-discrimination\/\" target=\"_blank\">medical<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2019\/07\/18\/meet-the-first-norse-heathen-airman-to-grow-a-beard-in-the-air-force\/\" target=\"_blank\">religious purposes<\/a> \u2014 because they may get in the way of necessary flight equipment and masks that protect against chemical, biological or radiological attacks, according to the Air Force. Unlike changes to allowed women\u2019s hairstyles, moving away from too-tight buns that can cause headaches and hair loss, the service has pointed out that approving full beards isn\u2019t medically necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A quarter-inch may not quite be enough hair for airmen to emulate the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2019\/03\/04\/mustache-march-olds-mustache-is-just-a-sliver-of-his-story\/\">magnificently mustachioed Air Force triple ace Brig. Gen. Robin Olds<\/a>.
