Col. Jason Goodale, an advanced party of Marines currently in Okinawa, Japan, waiting to deploy to Australia will remain there until a \u201cfinal decision\u201d is reached.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The delay of the deployment to Australia is the latest setback to hit the Corps as COVID-19 continues to impact military readiness and operations around the globe.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/coronavirus\/2020\/03\/19\/marines-headed-to-australia-will-have-to-undergo-quarantine-for-two-weeks\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"189\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/48523285422_f6bde2fd86_k.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Marines headed to Australia will have to undergo quarantine for two weeks<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">According to Australia\u2019s Department of Health, there are 565 confirmed cases of COVID-19 as of 6:30 am Thursday \u2014 that\u2019s an increase of 111 cases over a 24-hour period.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Corps had been expecting a 14-day quarantine for newly arriving in Marines in Australia to comply with new government restrictions for incoming travelers to self-isolate upon arriving Down Under.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roughly 2,500 Marines are expecting to participate in this year\u2019s annual six-month rotation to Australia, matching roughly the same size as last year\u2019s deployment. Marines had been scheduled to start arriving in Australia in April, with the others arriving over the summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBoth Australia and the United States remain committed to the deployment but a decision of this magnitude will take time,\u201d Goodale said in the newsletter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Goodale said the battalion would continue to be prepared and work towards the original deployment timeline so the unit can \u201cexecute smartly\u201d when a decision is made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Australia is a key ally for the Corps\u2019 goals to confront a rising China and the Marines\u2019 plans to redistribute forces across the Pacific.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Goodale said because of current restrictions the battalion cannot execute an \u201ceffective leave block&#8221; but Marines will not be charged leave because they can\u2019t go anywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The unit is instead transitioning to a \u201crelaxed battle rhythm\u201d with only two to three hours of activity a day to give Marines time to relax and refit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.gov.au\/news\/health-alerts\/novel-coronavirus-2019-ncov-health-alert\/coronavirus-covid-19-current-situation-and-case-numbers\" target=_blank> Australian government<\/a>, as of Friday there are 709 confirmed cases of COVID-19 \u2014 an increase of 144 cases over the last 24-hours.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cBoth Australia and the United
