{"id":27429,"date":"2020-07-24T18:20:23","date_gmt":"2020-07-24T18:20:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/07\/24\/we-cant-have-nice-things-top-gun-maverick-grounded-yet-again-release-bumped-to-2021\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T06:19:03","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T06:19:03","slug":"we-cant-have-nice-things-top-gun-maverick-grounded-yet-again-release-bumped-to-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/off-duty\/military-culture\/2020\/07\/24\/we-cant-have-nice-things-top-gun-maverick-grounded-yet-again-release-bumped-to-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"We can\u2019t have nice things \u2014 \u2018Top Gun: Maverick\u2019 grounded yet again, release bumped to 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paramount Pictures announced this week that additional delays are being applied to the release dates of numerous films, including the high-flying sequel to the 1986 hit \u201cTop Gun.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTop Gun: Maverick\u201d now has an official release date of July 2, 2021 \u2014 pending any additional dreaded amendments and assuming the coronavirus kindly, and finally, sits this one out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe truly believe that there is no movie-viewing experience like the one enjoyed in theatres,\u201d Paramount officials Chris Aronson and Mark Viane said in a release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are committed to the theatrical experience and our exhibition partners, and want to stress that we are confident that, when the time comes, audiences everywhere will once again enjoy the singular joy of seeing Paramount films on the big screen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/off-duty\/military-culture\/2020\/04\/03\/tom-cruise-confirms-top-gun-sequel-release-delayed-6-months-due-to-covid-19\/\" target=_blank>Tom Cruise announced the last round of delays in April<\/a>, tweeting, \u201cI know many of you have waited 34 years. Unfortunately, it will be a little longer. &#8230; Stay safe, everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anticipation for the film first soared following the release of its hair-raising trailers. A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.empireonline.com\/movies\/news\/tom-cruise-top-gun-maverick-exclusive\/\">Empire Magazine<\/a> interview with Tom Cruise and producer Jerry Bruckheimer, meanwhile, stoked the suspense of aviation and cinema nerds everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Details revealed in the Empire interview included director Joseph Kosinski\u2019s (\u201cOblivion,\u201d \u201cOnly the Brave\u201d) decision to drop IMAX cameras into the cockpit of an F\/A-18 Super Hornet to showcase CGI-free in-flight sequences that feature actors physically in the aircraft. (Trained pilots were at the helm off-camera.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During production, Cruise reportedly requested to pilot an F-18 but the Navy objected, cognizant, perhaps, that an actor at the controls of a Super Hornet could be the very danger zone Kenny Loggins always warned of. Still, the 57-year-old actor does pilot both a World War II-era P-51 Mustang \u2014 an aircraft he personally owns \u2014 and a helicopter in the film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI said to the studio, \u2018You don\u2019t know how hard this movie\u2019s going to be,\u201d Cruise told Empire. \u201cNo-one\u2019s ever done this before. There\u2019s never been an aerial sequence shot this way. I don\u2019t know if there ever will be again, to be honest.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When it finally does land in theaters, \u201cTop Gun: Maverick,\u201d which Cruise characterized as \u201cemotional,\u201d promises to be one of the more visually immersive cinematic experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cynically, Paramount\u2019s statement of \u201cwhen the time comes\u201d may be synonymous with \u201cwhen a vaccine is developed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">America\u2019s strategy of getting bored with COVID-19 appears to have done shockingly little to deter the virus\u2019 ferocity. Previously reopened places continue to shut their doors after our species demonstrated a blatant inability to socialize in moderation or follow elementary instructions supported by scientific evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Infinite sadness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to \u201cTop Gun,\u201d studio decision-makers at Paramount (again) delayed the release of the sequel to John Krasinski\u2019s thriller, \u201cA Quiet Place,\u201d starring Cillian Murphy alongside the original film\u2019s lead, Emily Blunt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similarly, Disney announced all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/star-wars-avatar-2-disney-delay\" target=_blank>upcoming Star Wars or Avatar<\/a> big screen splashes would be pushed back an additional year.
