Security Council \u201cgreat\u201d because \u201cwe could see dramatic changes in terms of what the U.S. policy has been doing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">President Donald Trump\u2019s plan for Afghanistan aims at ending America\u2019s longest war and eliminating a rising extremist threat in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It involves shifting away from a \u201ctime-based\u201d approach to fighting the war to instead put emphasis on linking U.S. assistance to concrete results and cooperation from the Afghan government. It includes sending up to 3,900 more U.S. troops on top of the 8,400 Americans that former President Barack Obama left in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe U.S. policy on Afghanistan is working,\u201d Haley said. \u201cWe are seeing that we are closer to talks with the Taliban and the peace process than we\u2019ve seen before. &#8230; And I think we really are going to work toward a peace process with the goal being that we do not want Afghanistan to be a safe haven for terrorism anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2017\/12\/22\/pence-promises-us-will-stay-in-afghanistan-fight-to-the-end\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/4047361.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Pence promises US will stay in Afghanistan fight &#8216;to the end&#8217;<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">But the vice president said he did not know if that commitment means adding more American troops to the war-torn country in months to come.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kazakhstan\u2019s U.N. Ambassador Kairat Umarov, the current council president who led the trip, said members were concerned \u201cwith the persistence of insecurity, especially with the intensification of terrorist activities in the north and east of Afghanistan and the regrouping of foreign terrorist fighters coming out of Syria and Iraq in Afghanistan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said the council urged the intensification of peace and reconciliation efforts, \u201cknowing that the military solution cannot be sufficient without the political process.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Umarov said members also stressed the importance of sticking to the electoral calendar which calls for elections for parliament and district officials this year and president next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Haley called elections \u201cthe biggest importance for the U.S.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe along with the council reiterated the point that they need to be free and fair elections, but they also need to include every ethnic community so that it is inclusive and moves forward to being something that represents the people,\u201d Haley said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The council visit followed the Trump administration\u2019s announcement this month that it was suspending military aid to Pakistan until it takes decisive action against militants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In August, the U.S. infuriated Pakistan by accusing it of providing a haven for extremist groups that carry out attacks in neighboring Afghanistan.
