Staff sergeants’ enlisted performance reports will close out on Jan. 31 under the Air Force’s overhauled promotion system, the service said in a Thursday release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Enlisted airmen have previously been evaluated throughout the year. But as part of the major performance evaluation and promotion overhaul currently being rolled out, the Air Force is moving to a system of static closeout dates coinciding with promotion eligibility cutoff dates, meaning that airmen in the same rank will all be evaluated at the same time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Jan. 31 staff sergeant closeout date will be effective Oct. 4, the Air Force said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And as of Oct. 4, staff sergeants will no longer get evaluations when they are transferred to another duty station, known as change of reporting EPRs. Instead, they will be evaluated like all other staff sergeants, each Jan. 31, even if they only recently arrived at their new location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Chief Master Sgt. Brandy Petzel, chief of Air Force enlisted policy, mentioned the Jan. 31 date at the Air Force Association’s annual conference outside of Washington, D.C., Sept. 17. Petzel also said senior airmen and below will have static closeout dates of March 31.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And the Air Force previously announced that static closeout dates for technical sergeants will be Nov. 30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Airmen have long demanded changes to the decades-old enlisted performance system, under which the vast majority of airmen received the top score of five out of five points, or “firewall 5s.” Because nearly all airmen received the top score, the system did little to differentiate between performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The new system will do away with numerical scores entirely, and instead, supervisors will choose from a series of pre-written responses that best describe an airman’s performance. Supervisors will then slot airmen’s EPRs into a series of categories, the top of which will be for those most highly recommended for promotion. The top two categories will have quotas, so only a certain percentage of airmen will be recommended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And the Air Force in July rolled out a new feedback form called the Airman Comprehensive Assessment, which is intended to foster communication between airmen and their supervisors.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
