{"id":28799,"date":"2016-04-05T23:32:00","date_gmt":"2016-04-05T23:32:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2016\/04\/05\/air-force-to-review-its-tattoo-policy\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T20:51:01","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T20:51:01","slug":"air-force-to-review-its-tattoo-policy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2016\/04\/05\/air-force-to-review-its-tattoo-policy\/","title":{"rendered":"Air Force to review its tattoo policy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like its sister services, the Air Force is getting in line to update its tattoo policy in the next few months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The Air Force has recently formed a working group to review the tattoo policy,&#8221; Air Force spokeswoman Capt. Brooke Brzozowske\u00a0told Air Force Times on Tuesday.\u00a0&#8220;Depending on the working group&#8217;s findings, we anticipate any policy change proposals to be ready for Air Force leadership consideration in the fall of 2016.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brzozowske did not say specifically what\u00a0senior leadership is looking to change, but that its been in discussion for some time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The news\u00a0comes just a week\u00a0after the Navy overhauled its tattoo policy, allowing sailors to sport\u00a0neck tattoos, sleeves and even markings behind their ears, the most lenient policy of any military service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And airmen, like sailors, may be able to cheer on new reforms if the outcome is favorable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Air Force\u00a0hasn&#8217;t updated its policy on tattoos since 2010, when there was\u00a0a change to <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">which changed <\/span>how the chain of command could determine<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">view<\/span>, or even measure, a tattoo to be &#8220;excessive.&#8221; If airmen have excessive tattoos\u00a0\u2014 anything defined\u00a0as covering\u00a025 percent\u00a0of an\u00a0exposed body part or\u00a0readily visible when wearing any\u00a0uniform other than PT gear \u2014 they <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">also\u00a0<\/span>need\u00a0to fill out a\u00a0form\u00a0for their commander\u00a0to document that an excessive tattoo has been waived and the individual has been authorized to cover the tattoo with his or her uniform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The form\u00a0remains on an airman&#8217;s service record\u00a0until the he or she leaves the Air Force or the tattoo is removed,\u00a0Brzozowske said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other restrictions apply: any visible tattoos or\u00a0markings\u00a0above the collarbone, such as the neck, head, face, tongue, lips, and\/or scalp, are prohibited. Unauthorized tattoos\u00a0need to be removed.\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">, and per a<\/span>At the commander&#8217;s discretion, they could be removed through various sessions\u00a0in a Defense Department medical treatment facility.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Airmen cannot tattoo themselves with symbols linked to hate groups, Brzozowske said. The Air Force Office of Special Investigations generates a list of what constitutes intolerable markings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;If presented with a request from Air Force officials, AFOSI would research the symbol to determine if it has been reported to law enforcement in the past as associated with hate groups,&#8221;\u00a0Brzozowske said. Local and federal law enforcement, such as the Justice Department, FBI and\u00a0Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, play a part in determining such symbols, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Input<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">s<\/span> from soldiers prompted the\u00a0Army to updated its tattoo policy last April. Under the new rules, tattoo\u00a0sleeves, which\u00a0typically cover the arm from shoulder to wrist,\u00a0are once again authorized as long as they don&#8217;t extend past the wrist,\u00a0Sergeant Major of the Army Dan Dailey told Army Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;As long as it&#8217;s not visible in the Army uniform \u2026 that&#8217;s the spirit of what we went after,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Marine Corps, however, was not willing\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">as kind\u00a0<\/span>to allow Marines to ink on sleeves, covered or uncovered. The service, pending its own review, will be more lenient toward Marines who want tattoos, but &#8220;they can\u2019t get a sleeve,&#8221;\u00a0Commandant Gen.
