He joined France\u2019s air service after fighting the Germans during World War I.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/digital-show-dailies\/2019\/09\/16\/this-is-the-name-of-the-air-forces-new-training-jet\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"202\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/190913-F-XXXXX-1003-BOEING-IMAGE.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">This is the name of the Air Force\u2019s new training jet<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The new designation of the jet formerly known as T-X pays tribute to aviation legends.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. military was segregated at the time and would not accept him as a pilot because of his race. But Bullard in 1994 was posthumously commissioned second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou must remember that, years ago, most people were pretty sure that, if you had black skin, you were probably pretty stupid, you probably couldn\u2019t fly a sophisticated machine like an airplane,\u201d Hillard Pouncy Jr. said. \u201cThis guy proved you can.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pouncy, 97, was one of the original Tuskegee Airmen and attended Wednesday\u2019s unveiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/5823543.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"2nd Lt. Sculptor Gregory Johnson told the Journal-Constitution he used several black and white photos of Bullard to design it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTo have the courage at age 19 to join the fabled French Foreign Legion and volunteer to fly at a time when aviation was far more dangerous and unproven, and frankly when pilots had an exceptionally short service life, this is nothing short of heroic,\u201d said Col. Charles McGee \u2014 an original Tuskegee Airman, veteran of three wars, and aviation legend \u2014 still clearly remembers the day he shot down a German Luftwaffe fighter.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bullard eventually returned to the U.S., where he worked as a longshoreman and security guard. He died in 1961 after being diagnosed with intestinal cancer. Two years before his death, he was given France\u2019s prestigious Legion of Honour award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m so proud right now just to be a part of this experience and to witness recognition that is long overdue,\u201d said Terrence Chester, who was among nearly two dozen Bullard family descendants to attend Wednesday\u2019s ceremony. \u201cWords cannot really express my emotions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/5823551.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"2nd Lt.
