{"id":29218,"date":"2019-08-29T19:19:16","date_gmt":"2019-08-29T19:19:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/08\/29\/air-force-units-must-provide-lactation-space-for-nursing-moms\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T20:50:12","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T20:50:12","slug":"air-force-units-must-provide-lactation-space-for-nursing-moms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2019\/08\/29\/air-force-units-must-provide-lactation-space-for-nursing-moms\/","title":{"rendered":"Air Force: Units must provide lactation space for nursing moms"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force is now requiring units to provide private, secure and sanitary rooms for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2016\/04\/23\/female-airman-breastfeeding-featured-in-photographer-s-latest-collection\/\" target=\"_blank\">nursing mothers<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/08\/01\/air-force-releases-photos-of-new-breastfeeding-undershirt\/\" target=\"_blank\">breastfeed<\/a> or express breast milk, according to a Wednesday release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an Aug. 15 guidance memorandum, the Air Force outlined procedures and requirements for setting up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/spouse\/2019\/03\/13\/no-more-luxury-breast-pumps-for-new-moms-under-tricare-policy-change\/\" target=_blank>lactation rooms<\/a> that can be locked from the inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Christy Nolta, deputy assistant secretary of the Air Force for reserve affairs and airman readiness, said airmen at the grassroots level brought the lack of an Air Force-wide lactation room policy to the service\u2019s attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur job here is to do what we can to make it easier for airmen to serve,\u201d Nolta said. \u201cWomen shouldn\u2019t feel like they must choose between serving and being a mother.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nolta said that small policy tweaks such as this change can do a lot to improve airmen\u2019s lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt adds up, improves quality of life, and supports retention efforts across the service,\u201d Nolta said. \u201cWe remain really focused on breaking more barriers to make continuing to serve an easy choice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2016\/10\/12\/five-breastfeeding-rooms-open-at-malmstrom-air-force-base\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/malmstrom-breastfeeding-room.JPG.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Five breastfeeding rooms open at Malmstrom Air Force Base<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The new Mother&#039;s Rooms offer clean, designated areas for mothers who are nursing or pumping.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force said lactation rooms should be comfortable and welcoming places for nursing mothers, along the lines of a break room. They should be in the immediate vicinity of the workplace, with a table, a place to sit, electrical outlets, and comfortable temperatures and adequate lighting. They also must be near a source of hot and cold water for handwashing, and sanitizing breast pumps and parts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe received a lot of feedback from nursing mothers about having to pump or nurse in less than ideal facilities,\u201d Maj. Alea Nadeem, the Air Force Women\u2019s Initiative Team chief, said in the release. \u201cThey were having to pump in bathrooms, locker rooms, and borrowed offices, and this sometimes discourages new mothers from continuing to express milk.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force\u2019s new memo also provides guidance for when mothers should be allowed lactation breaks. Supervisors should provide both military and civilian nursing mothers reasonable lactation breaks \u2014 defined by Air Force Instruction 44-102 as 15 to 30 minutes every three to four hours \u2014 for at least one year postpartum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Until now, bases have set up lactation rooms on their own. For example, Malmstrom Air Force Base in Montana opened five Mothers Rooms in 2016, so new mothers no longer had to use storage areas or empty offices. Those rooms had stations, each including a table, a chair, a power outlet and a lamp, as well as couches, rocking chairs, and changing areas for
