It will remain in place through May 11, the release said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials are making exceptions for certain Category I, IV, and VI travelers, which includes exemptions for service members and dependents on emergency leave and Wounded Warriors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHowever, travel via Space-Available is never guaranteed and, as always, travel is available only on a space-available basis,\u201d the release reads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Medical screening protocols still apply for all travelers, the command\u2019s release said, adding that the suspension will reduce the risk of transmitting the coronavirus between aircrew, screeners and others at passenger terminals.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2020\/03\/17\/goldfein-to-commanders-rise-to-the-occasion-during-coronavirus-crisis\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Goldfein-coronavirus-2.JPG.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Goldfein to commanders: \u2018Rise to the occasion\u2019 during coronavirus crisis<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">&quot;Not your job to fix this,&quot; Goldfein said. &quot;Your job is to lead.&quot;<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Space-A is a travel benefit afforded to eligible military personnel, dependents and retirees. The suspension policy was authorized by Ellen Lord, under secretary of defense for acquisition and sustainment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur focus remains on force health protection, and this temporary suspension of Space-A travel represents a sensible course of action to increase force health protection measures, while simultaneously decreasing risk to mission from COVID-19,\u201d Lord said in a statement accompanying the release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The suspension also follows broader travel restrictions for service members and their families that were issued March 13. The Defense Department halted all domestic travel, including permanent change of station and temporary duty orders, through May 11.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"692\" height=\"649\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-22-at-19.33.23.png.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-58139\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-22-at-19.33.23.png.png 692w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-22-at-19.33.23.png.png?resize=300,281 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 692px) 100vw, 692px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. government has so far not restricted air travel on civilian carriers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t see that right now in the immediate future but remember, we are very open-minded about whatever it takes to preserve the health of the American public,\u201d Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ThisWeekABC\/status\/1239170793591967749\" target=_blank>told ABC News<\/a> on March 15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The State Department has advised U.S. citizens to avoid all international travel due to the global impact of the outbreak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">State Department officials recommended Americans who are traveling abroad to return to the United States unless they\u2019re prepared to remain overseas for \u201can indefinite period,\u201d according to a March 19 travel
