However, the Maritime Safety Administration had announced drills that started Monday and run through Sept. 30 over the Bohai Gulf east of Beijing, an area under the northern command. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Relations between the U.S. and China have sunk to their lowest in decades amid disputes over a myriad of issues including trade, technology, Taiwan and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2020\/07\/30\/chinese-long-range-bombers-join-drills-over-south-china-sea\/\" target=_blank>the South China Sea<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2019\/08\/24\/transporting-u-2-chase-cars-over-the-atlantic-presents-unique-challenges-for-mcguire-squadron\/\" target=_blank>high-altitude reconnaissance planes<\/a> were flown over China, the former Soviet Union and other countries in the Communist bloc during the Cold War and upgraded versions to continue to support missions in Asia and elsewhere.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China is also staging <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2020\/08\/24\/carrier-ronald-reagan-conducts-air-operations-in-south-china-sea\/\" target=_blank>naval drills in the South China Sea<\/a>, which it claims virtually in its entirety but over which five other governments also exercise claims. Washington and Taipei have increased military and governmental contacts in recent years and this month, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar became the highest-ranking U.S. official to visit Taiwan, prompting a Chinese protest.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Eastern Theater Command will \u201cstay on high alert and take all necessary measures to fight against provocations and protect national sovereignty and territorial integrity,\u201d the ministry quoted command spokesperson, Senior Colonel Zhang Chunhui, as saying.
