Charles McGee \u2014 an original Tuskegee Airman, veteran of three wars, and aviation legend \u2014 still clearly remembers the day he shot down a German Luftwaffe fighter.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/new-york\/ny-metro-tuskegee-airmen-post-office-20181119-story.html\" target=_blank>The Daily News<\/a> reported that Defour said at the Nov. 19 ceremony that the World War II squadron\u2019s members \u201cdidn\u2019t know we were making history at the time. We were just doing our job.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Tuskegee Airmen were the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/03\/12\/tuskegee-airman-a-retired-new-york-detective-dies-at-95\/\" target=_blank>first African-American military aviators<\/a> in the U.S. Armed Forces, which were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/military-honor\/2018\/10\/07\/tuskegee-airmen-memorial-shares-freeman-field-mutiny-story-that-led-to-military-desegregation\/\" target=_blank>racially segregated<\/a> until after the war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Return of the Red Tails, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving the memory of the Tuskegee Airmen, DeFour joined the Air Corps in 1942 and was assigned to the 366th Air Service Squadron, serving in Italy, after basic training in Tuskegee, Alabama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He served as an aircraft technician and painted the red tails on the planes that gave the squadron its nickname.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DeFour was a Post Office employee for more than 30 years after his military service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He remained active into his later years and often spoke to schoolchildren about his experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/11\/24\/congressional-gold-medal-solidifies-tuskegee-airman-honor-posthumously-for-delaware-woman\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP18324691695344.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Congressional Gold Medal solidifies Tuskegee Airman honor posthumously for Delaware woman<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Georgetown native Artishia Mae Conaway Stephens finally has her Tuskegee Airman wings.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsday.com\/long-island\/nassau\/tuskegee-airmen-give-hempstead-students-black-history-lesson-1.11515842\" target=\"_blank\">Newsday<\/a> reported that DeFour and fellow Tuskegee Airman Dabney Montgomery visited a fifth-grade class in Hempstead, New York, to mark Black History Month in 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Montgomery, who died in September of that year, told the students that when he returned from wartime service to his native Alabama, he was not allowed to vote. &#8220;We have lost so much talent, we have lost so much achievement because of discrimination,&#8221; Montgomery said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DeFour added, \u201cWe need to spread the word to let them know what went on in our time.
