Air Force pilots can apply to new aviation-only program"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If all you want is to fly in the Air Force, a new program might be for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eligible mobility <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/05\/31\/retention-bonuses-are-spiking-for-a-lot-of-air-force-pilots-could-you-get-up-to-420k\/\" target=\"_blank\">pilots<\/a> can apply for Air Mobility Command\u2019s new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2017\/12\/29\/new-in-2018-amc-pushes-for-aviation-only-career-track\/\" target=\"_blank\">Aviator Technical Track<\/a> that cuts out non-flying-related duties and lets you stay in the cockpit longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis fulfills a promise to our airmen that we listened to them and wanted to implement their ideas,\u201d Gen. Carlton Everhart, head of AMC, told Air Force Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In April 2017, Everhart reached out to airmen via email and social media to solicit ideas on how the Air Force can better retain talent as it deals with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/06\/11\/ending-the-pilot-exodus-air-force-rolls-out-new-bonuses-incentives-will-it-work-this-time\/\" target=\"_blank\">pilot shortages<\/a>. The Air Force is down about 2,000 pilots, with about 1,600 mobility pilots eligible to separate in the next four years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The four-star received more than 700 responses from airmen, and one of the top suggestions was a flying-only career track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everhart said he\u2019s seeking a small cadre of active-duty mobility pilots who are majors or major-selects with 11 to 13 years of commissioned service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Selectees will still be required to maintain all Air Force standards, including health and fitness and readiness requirements, but professional development education and advanced academic degrees will be optional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe hope to retain pilots by reducing developmental requirements for officers not interested in command,\u201d Everhart said. \u201cThose things we have traditionally said were the stepping stones to move you into a leadership track to broaden your expertise \u2026 are now optional.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2017\/06\/04\/air-mobility-command-turns-to-airmen-for-ideas-to-fix-its-pilot-retention-problem\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/mobility-pilot.JPG.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Air Mobility Command turns to airmen for ideas to fix its pilot retention problem<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">AMC created a task force to pull suggestions from more than 600 comments from airmen.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There won\u2019t be any required duties not related to flying, but those in the program still need to go through training, standardization and tactics. Since they\u2019re flying-related billets, selected airmen can still continue to fly as they complete those duties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Airmen can also decide to leave the program if they\u2019d rather switch back to a leadership role or a leadership track, he said. Then there will still be enough time to catch back up with peers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re going to try to give the options back to the aviator,\u201d Everhart said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pilots chosen for the Aviator Technical Track can remain in one assignment for up to five years if they so choose, which Everhart hopes increases predictability and a better work-life balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re trying to guarantee them one specific location for five years,\u201d he said. \u201cWe are listening to concerns about quality of life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There will also be opportunities for pilots in the program to explore avenues outside of AMC, Everhart said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou may not just stay in Air Mobility Command,\u201d he said. \u201cYou may go to another [major command].\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/05\/11\/new-app-lets-student-pilots-easily-access-all-their-training-documents\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/T-6-Texans.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">New app lets student pilots easily access all their training documents<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Airmen with the 80th Flying Training Wing created an app to make training manual, emergency procedure guidance and more available to pilots in training via their cellphones and tablets.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eligible airmen can start applying for the program today via the <a href=\"https:\/\/mypers.af.mil\/app\/login\/redirect\/home\/session\/L3RpbWUvMTUzMjExOTYyNi9zaWQvZlVXU29ZNkdhSlZzRksyZUo5cl9lMlRWbGJNc0NVQkJzNXNtano2YVRVbWVIQWdGemd5WDlZelpxVHVnSHpLS1RIN3dfMUVVMVEwUDh3QUdvQ3l6QWFuY05XS3RpT1l1WDAwYTh4eG5MWlZTY0dHSGxQSjRtSkF3JTIxJTIx\" target=_blank>MyPers website<\/a>, and the application deadline is Aug. 17.
