{"id":30719,"date":"2020-02-10T22:14:41","date_gmt":"2020-02-10T22:14:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/02\/10\/the-air-force-just-canceled-one-of-its-hypersonic-weapons-programs\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T22:17:48","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T22:17:48","slug":"the-air-force-just-canceled-one-of-its-hypersonic-weapons-programs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2020\/02\/10\/the-air-force-just-canceled-one-of-its-hypersonic-weapons-programs\/","title":{"rendered":"US Air Force kills one of its hypersonic weapons programs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The Air Force has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2018\/04\/18\/air-force-taps-lockheed-for-new-hypersonic-cruise-missile\/\" target=_blank>cancelled the Hypersonic Conventional Strike Weapon program<\/a>, one of the two major hypersonic weapons being spearheaded by the service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the development is a blow to Lockheed Martin, which was developing HCSW, it\u2019s other hypersonic weapons program with the Air Force \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2018\/08\/14\/lockheed-nabs-another-big-hypersonic-weapons-contract\/\" target=_blank>the Air-Launched Rapid Response Weapon<\/a> \u2014 will proceed, Air Force spokeswoman Ann Stefanek confirmed on Feb. 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because of budget pressures, the Air Force was forced to choose between funding HCSW and ARRW in FY21, and opted to keep ARRW due to it being a more \u201cunique glide body design&#8221; compared with HCSW, which was similar to hypersonic weapons under development by other services, Stefanek said. ARRW is on track for a early operational capability in FY22.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/smr\/federal-budget\/\" target=_blank><b>Click here for more from the FY21 budget.<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe will continue to work collaboratively with our sister services to see how we can most effectively leverage each other\u2019s capabilities, ensuring the most prudent use of taxpayer dollars,\u201d she said in an emailed statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lockheed was notified on Monday that its work on HCSW will conclude after a critical design review this spring. The program\u2019s cancellation was not due to poor performance, Stefanek added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe HCSW team pioneered significant advancements in hypersonic technology development and integration of existing, mature technologies for use in various hypersonic efforts across the Department of Defense, including Army, Navy, and Missile Defense Agency programs,&#8221; she said. &#8220;The HCSW team successfully met all developmental milestones. These advancements will serve to expedite the generation and demonstration of various hypersonic weapon capabilities in the near future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In total, the Air Force hopes to invest $382 million on hypersonic prototyping in FY21, down from $576 in FY20.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force initially envisioned HCSW as a long-range stand-off missile capable of being launched from an aircraft and traveling faster than speeds of Mach 5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lockheed in 2018 won the HCSW contract, which had a value of up to $918 million and covered \u201cdesign, development, engineering, systems integration, test, logistics planning, and aircraft integration support.\u201d Then the company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/techwatch\/2019\/12\/17\/lockheed-awards-815m-contract-for-hypersonic-missile-motor\/\" target=_blank>selected Aerojet Rocketdyne in 2019<\/a> to provide the solid-fuel rocket motor.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Air Force will not proceed with the Hypersonic Conventional Strike Weapon.
