{"id":30831,"date":"2020-04-09T15:04:32","date_gmt":"2020-04-09T15:04:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/04\/09\/more-than-1400-air-force-trainees-graduate-from-bmt-wearing-face-masks\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T20:56:46","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T20:56:46","slug":"more-than-1400-air-force-trainees-graduate-from-bmt-wearing-face-masks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/coronavirus\/2020\/04\/09\/more-than-1400-air-force-trainees-graduate-from-bmt-wearing-face-masks\/","title":{"rendered":"More than 1,400 Air Force trainees graduate from BMT \u2014 wearing face masks"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 1,400 trainees are graduating from the Air Force\u2019s Basic Military Training on Thursday \u2014 all clad in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/04\/05\/troops-to-start-wearing-face-masks-in-public-to-prevent-coronavirus-spread\/?utm_source=Sailthru&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=EBB%2004.06.20&amp;utm_term=Editorial%20-%20Military%20-%20Early%20Bird%20Brief\" target=\"_blank\">face masks<\/a> in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force characterized the graduation at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in Texas as a \u201chistoric occasion\u201d due to the face masks, and that a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/coronavirus\/2020\/04\/08\/air-force-bmt-shortened-in-response-to-covid-19-pandemic\/\" target=_blank>double graduation <\/a>is slated for the day in an effort to remove more trainees from the BMT campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FUSAFBMT%2Fvideos%2F607731433172419%2F&#038;show_text=0&#038;width=560\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" allowTransparency=\"true\" allowFullScreen=\"true\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Sunday, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2020\/04\/07\/keep-it-conservative-services-break-out-face-mask-rules\/\" target=_blank>Pentagon announced<\/a> that service members are instructed to wear \u201ccloth face coverings when they cannot maintain six feet of social distance in public areas or work centers.\u201d The guidance said that medical personal protective equipment like N95 masks would not be distributed, but rather encouraged service members to create their own coverings from \u201chousehold items.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Education and Training Command has complied with DoD guidelines, and said neck gaiters, neck warmers and balaclavas were all acceptable forms of face coverings. Additionally, the command said that BMT leadership is working to obtain face masks to distribute to staff and trainees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe safety of our Airmen and families is our top concern as we continue our essential mission of recruiting, training and educating exceptional Airmen,\u201d Maj. Gen. Craig Wills, 19th Air Force commander, said in an Air Force news release. \u201cCloth face masks provide an added layer of protection for everyone on our team. Being proactive with the things we can control is critical in our battle against the virus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Education and Training Command has taken several steps to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 among trainees. For example, trainees are now graduating after seven weeks, rather than at eight a half to promote social distancing precautions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The shake up in training length is why <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2020\/03\/26\/air-force-will-test-a-new-boot-camp-location-to-fight-covid-19\/\" target=_blank>two classes are graduating from BMT<\/a> on Thursday: one wrapped up their training in eight and a half weeks, while the other class is being pushed out after seven and a half weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of Tuesday, the Air Force is now cutting down the number of trainees who report for duty to about 460. That\u2019s a drop from the up to 800 trainees in each class under normal circumstances. Additionally, 60 trainees were sent to Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi this week rather than Lackland to conduct basic training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA variety of approaches are being used to shorten the training length, such as decreasing time spent on certain drill and ceremony items,\u201d the Air Force said in a news release Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of Tuesday, the Air Force said 351 airmen have tested positive for COVID-19, along with 129 civilians, 99 dependents and 43
