David Eastburn, a Pentagon spokesman, said the announcement of a new policy would have no immediate practical effect on the military because the Pentagon is obliged to continue to recruit and retain transgender people in accordance with current law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But outside advocates said the new rules appeared to be a new attempt to boot those individuals from the ranks, under the argument that their medical diagnosis makes them unable to meet enlistment and retention standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the new policy \u201cwill enable the military to apply well-established mental and physical health standards \u2014 including those regarding the use of medical drugs \u2014 equally to all individuals who want to join and fight for the best military force the world has ever seen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump surprised the Pentagon\u2019s leadership last summer with a series of tweets declaring he would reverse a policy change by former President Barack Obama to allow transgender individuals to serve openly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That ban has been blocked by several legal challenges, and four federal courts have ruled against the White House\u2019s position. (Jacquelyn Martin\/AP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the Friday release, the White House said Mattis and Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen agreed with the policy update. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rights advocates said that while the new policy won\u2019t supersede any of the existing court challenges, it has sent a disturbing message to military families that their commander in chief doesn\u2019t support their service and sacrifices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Trump administration\u2019s continued insistence on targeting our families for discrimination is appalling, reckless and unpatriotic,\u201d said Ashley Broadway-Mack, president of the American Military Partner Association and spouse of an active duty Army officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey are literally wreaking havoc on the lives of our military families; families in South Korea, families in Virginia, families in North Carolina. It\u2019s like \u2018don\u2019t ask, don\u2019t tell\u2019 all over again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">David Stacy, director of government affairs at the Human Rights Campaign, criticized Trump for the timing of the new order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis administration chose to announce this policy late on a Friday night, under cover of darkness, because they are embarrassed by it, and they should be,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have 15,000 or more transgender troops and their families who are going to wake up tomorrow with their lives in chaos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is a threat to military security and our national defense.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Opponents are set to argue against the military transgender policies in court again on Tuesday. Rights groups said none of the changes in the new policy would affect their legal strategy moving forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>The Associated Press contributed to this
