Still, ground forces appearing in the border region does look like an escalation in the conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The war in Yemen has been ongoing since 2014. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2017\/11\/08\/us-says-iran-is-arming-yemeni-rebels-with-ballistic-missiles\/\">Iranian-backed Houthi rebels<\/a>, originally aligned with the ousted \u2014 and now deceased \u2014 former President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2017\/12\/19\/saudis-intercept-yemen-rebel-missile-targeting-royal-palace\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Ali Abdullah Saleh<\/a> are combating a Saudi-led coalition backing President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/flashpoints\/2018\/03\/20\/senate-kills-resolution-to-end-us-role-in-yemeni-civil-war\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/3319652.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Senate kills resolution to end US role in Yemeni civil war<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The U.S. Senate voted Tuesday to kill a bipartisan resolution to remove U.S. forces from the conflict in Yemen between a Saudi-led coalition and Houthi rebels.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other factions fighting for slices of Yemeni territory include al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula and the Islamic State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since 2015, U.S. military support to the Saudi-led coalition has remained in a non-combat capacity, Air Force Capt. AnnMarie Annicelli, a spokeswoman for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/2017\/02\/07\/yemeni-rebels-say-they-fired-a-ballistic-missile-at-saudi-capital\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Air Forces Central Command<\/a>, previously told Military Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn 2017, AFCENT deployed liaisons to Saudi Arabia to share best practices with the [Royal Saudi Air Force] and advise on how to mitigate civilian casualties by improving their planning, targeting and execution of air operations,\u201d Annicelli said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Times wrote that the Green Berets deployed to the Saudi border in December, the same month a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefings-statements\/white-house-statement-iranian-supported-missile-attacks-saudi-arabia\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">ballistic missile fired from Yemen<\/a> was intercepted over Riyadh, the Saudi Kingdom\u2019s capital. (Raytheon)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The attack wasn\u2019t the first, nor the last, as dozens of missiles have been fired by the Houthis across the Saudi border since the conflict began. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saudi Arabia uses the U.S.-made <a href=\"\/TEMP-LINK-TEMP\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\">Patriot surface-to-air anti-missile<\/a> system for ballistic missile intercepts, although there have been doubts as to the system\u2019s success rate. More concerning to some is the possible origins of Houthi missile parts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2018\/04\/29\/pompeo-in-saudi-arabia-talks-tough-on-iran-gulf-dispute\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">White House issued a statement<\/a> in November accusing Iran of exporting ballistic missile parts to Yemen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese missile systems were not present in Yemen before the conflict,\u201d the statement reads. \u201cWe call upon the United Nations to conduct a thorough examination of evidence that the Iranian regime is perpetuating the war in Yemen to advance its regional ambitions.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link smg-interstitial-link--fallback wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/gallery\/2017\/12\/14\/us-links-ballistic-missiles-fired-on-saudi-arabia-to-iran\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__fallback-link\">US links missiles fired on Saudi Arabia to Iran<\/a><\/aside>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While Iran admits support for the Houthis, the country denies arming them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The missile threat to Saudi Arabia has been a longstanding issue for the Kingdom, as well as the Trump administration, which is calling for international action to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2018\/04\/24\/trump-warns-iran-will-pay-if-it-restarts-nuclear-program\/\" title=\"\" class=\"selected-link\" target=\"_blank\" data-original-title=\"\" aria-describedby=\"popover752439\"> punish Iran for its own missile programs<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIran destabilizes this entire region,\u201d <a href=\"\/TEMP-LINK-TEMP\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\">Secretary of State Mike Pompeo<\/a> said during a visit to Riyadh this week. \u201cWe\u2019ve got a common challenge in Iran, I think they all recognize that.
