{"id":31200,"date":"2021-02-27T06:21:18","date_gmt":"2021-02-27T06:21:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2021\/02\/27\/study-finds-possible-link-between-blast-exposure-and-alzheimers-disease\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T02:44:42","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T02:44:42","slug":"study-finds-possible-link-between-blast-exposure-and-alzheimers-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2021\/02\/27\/study-finds-possible-link-between-blast-exposure-and-alzheimers-disease\/","title":{"rendered":"Study finds possible link between blast exposure and Alzheimer\u2019s disease"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recent Army-funded research shows that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2020\/09\/18\/this-army-backed-research-could-unlock-ways-to-combat-sleep-deprivation\/\" target=_blank>troops<\/a> exposed to military explosive shockwaves are at a higher risk for developing Alzheimer\u2019s disease \u2013 even if they didn\u2019t receive a traumatic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/opinion\/commentary\/2020\/02\/01\/debate-over-brain-injuries-in-us-military-a-teachable-moment\/\" target=_blank>brain injury<\/a> from the blast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command, the Army Research Lab, National Institutes of Health and researchers at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke have uncovered the link, according to an Army <a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/article\/243681\" target=_blank>statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis finding may explain those many blast-exposed individuals returning from war zones with no detectable brain injury, but who still suffer from persistent neurological symptoms, including depression, headaches, irritability and memory problems,\u201d said Dr. Gen Bahr, the William C. Friday distinguished professor of molecular biology and biochemistry at UNC-Pembroke.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2021\/01\/28\/fda-approves-army-developed-battlefield-tbi-blood-test\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/army-brain.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">FDA approves Army-developed battlefield TBI blood test<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The test detects two proteins present after TBI occurs.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The neurological complications from blast incidents without a TBI symptom or diagnosis may be \u201crooted in distinct alterations to the tiny connections between neurons in the hippocampus,\u201d according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/article\/243681\" target=_blank>statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hippocampus is a part of the brain particularly involved in social behavior and encoding memories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The research was published recently in \u201cBrain Pathology,\u201d the medical journal of the International Society of Neuropathology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBlasts can lead to debilitating neurological and psychological damage, but the underlying injury mechanisms are not well understood,\u201d said Dr. Frederick Gregory, program manager, Army Research Office. \u201cUnderstanding the molecular pathophysiology of blast-induced brain injury and potential impacts on long-term brain health is extremely important to understand in order to protect the lifelong health and well-being of our service members.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers took slices of hippocampus from a rat\u2019s brain and exposed the living tissue to controlled blast waves. The exposure led to selective reductions in parts of the brain necessary for memory, and electrical activity from those neuronal connections was sharply diminished, according to the statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those findings indicated Alzheimer\u2019s-type effects in the brain without the recognizable brain damage that is present with TBI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While blast exposure is not a guarantee of developing Alzheimer\u2019s disease, the new research indicates that such exposure does present an \u201cincreased risk\u201d of developing the condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEarly detection of this measurable deterioration could improve diagnoses and treatment of recurring neuropsychiatric impediments and reduce the risk of developing dementia and Alzheimer\u2019s disease later in life,\u201d Bahr
